The School of Computing at Dublin City University has earned a strong reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Our existing undergrad programmes including, the B.Sc. in Computer Science, the B.Sc. in Computing for Business and the B.Sc. in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are aimed at students who are interested in a career in data analytics and related data science roles. In addition, we also offer a range of innovative taught M.Sc. programmes aimed at producing graduates with the professional and personal skills most sought after in the Information Economy.
The School also enjoys a lively, engaging environment for research in many areas of computing, with numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. research students producing outputs of significance at the top international level. Role Profile
The School of Computing is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Computer Science to join its expanding team of talented academics. The successful candidate will have a strong research track record in Software Engineering and/or Data Analytics/AI and will contribute to teaching, curriculum development and administrative activities in the School of Computing, across all levels. The appointee must have a demonstrated track record of teaching at B.Sc. (or higher) level and should also have an excellent research track record (including publication in high-quality peer-reviewed journals/conferences, engagement in the supervision of research students, engagement with industry, attracting research funding, and other forms of international research leadership). They will be expected to demonstrate an alignment of their research interests with existing research expertise within the School of Computing.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Teaching and Learning
The successful candidate will prepare, deliver and assess a range of core Computing subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a manner consistent with DCU’s high academic standards. This extends to supporting innovation in teaching, transnational and digital provision of programmes, engaging with international travel, contributing to internationalisation efforts and integrating new technologies as needed. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Contributing to the design and development of new programmes.
- Developing and delivering new or reconceptualised modules and resources.
- Designing and assessing examinations and other types of coursework.
- Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies (including research led teaching) which foster a deep approach to learning and equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners, including challenge-based learning and concentrated and immersive learning experiences.
- Co-designing with other academics and industry partners, a suite of tools and initiatives that support the transversal skills pathway and embedding transversal skills development, diagnostics and assessments into new and existing programmes.
- Supervision of laboratory sessions, student projects and student mentoring.
- Proactive engagement with the renewal of existing courses and programmes.
- Undertaking professional development for teaching.
- Undertaking such administration/outreach duties as will be defined by the Head of School and may include some of the following: degree programme coordination; participation in committees; visits to industry; student recruitment.
- Being goal orientated, collaborative, using initiative and showing leadership potential.
Research and Scholarship
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in high-quality research activities and publish to the highest international standard both independently and where appropriate, in collaboration with one or more existing research groups/centres. This engagement should lead to publications in high impact factor journals and attend high-ranked international conferences. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Engaging with and leading aspects of research and teaching in subjects related to the different programmes in the School of Computing.
- Diligently pursuing articulated research interests and research profile development plans that support the school’s current research priorities and DCU’s Strategic Plan.
- Showing potential to establish an independent research programme (in the topics defined earlier), attracting research funding from competitive research funding schemes and/or industry and becoming a research leader of international reputation.
- Participating in research-related administration such as research student hiring/supervision, PhD thesis examination and related duties.
- Undertaking professional development in research leadership and management.
- Engaging with the development of working relationships with industry, employers and professional bodies.
Service and Contribution to University and Society
Contribute to the ongoing direction and strategy within the School, Faculty, University and profession, for example:
- Engagement with strategic planning, quality review and improvement processes and external programme accreditations, via involvement with the appropriate professional institution(s) and associated initiatives.
- Developing and delivering the international activities of the School of Computing, including international travel to do so.
- Undertaking administrative functions related to the activities of the School of Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Computing, and the wider University. Such duties will be defined by the Head of School and may include some of the following: degree programme coordination; participation on University committees; visits to students on industrial placement within the DCU INTRA programme; student recruitment.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent (NFQ Level 10) in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Data Science plus one years’ relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience, with a record of high-quality university-level teaching and module development.
- Strong demonstrated, high-quality teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, ideally including experience in module development, innovative pedagogies and/or assessments, international and/or online or technology-assisted teaching.
- An excellent research track record and trajectory, including publication in high-quality peer reviewed journals/conferences, particularly in one or more of the following research areas:
- Data Analytics / Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence / Statistical Data Modelling / Information Analytics and Retrieval.
- Software Engineering / Software Testing / Full-stack Development.
- Information Retrieval / Generative Models / Multimodal User Models / NLP.
- Cybersecurity / Data Privacy Preservation Technologies.
- Educational Technologies / Digital Personalised Learning
- A record of original research with publications in top international journals or, based on career stage, shows exceptional promise in this regard.
- Experience in supervision of research students, engagement with industry and attracting research funding.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills consistent with the highest quality of teaching and learning, together with evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
- Ability to develop and maintain international networks and partnerships within the academic and professional communities.
Desirable
- A minimum of 3 years’ relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience would be advantageous.

Salary Scale:
Assistant Professor - €64,583 - €103,501 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale.
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Remote Working Policy
DCU operates a Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro-rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'.
Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
