Overview of the department
SALIS is a research-intensive, multilingual and multicultural School. We currently offer French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) as core subjects on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes such as the BA in Applied Language and Translation Studies and the BA in International Business. We have a highly regarded, long-running PhD programme, and staff research specialisms in applied linguistics, translation studies, intercultural and literary studies.
Role Profile
The successful candidates will conduct high-quality research and teaching in Japanese Studies. They will also participate in the School’s external engagement activities. Further, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to programme management, research supervision and the service activities of the School, Faculty, and University. They will report to the Head of School.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
The successful candidate will be able to prepare, deliver and assess a range of core subjects at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level in a manner consistent with DCU’s high academic standards and in a hybrid environment which involves both campus delivery and elements of remote delivery. Teaching extends to supporting innovation in curriculum development. The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Learning
- The successful candidate will be required to contribute significantly to the development, teaching, assessment and administration of existing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This teaching will include module design and delivery and professional placement including its attendant duties of supporting and evaluating students on placement visits and writing reports.
- In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise undergraduate theses, contribute to tutorials and to the wider teaching of the School as required by the Head of School.
Research and Scholarship
- Contributing to the School and Faculty’s research profile by conducting and publishing high-quality research and applying for research funding.
- Maintaining existing and developing new relations with partners in the Japanese language area and international organisations.
- Develop collaborations with the current academic staff in the School, and staff in the associated Schools and research institutes at DCU.
Service and Contribution to the University and Society
- The candidate will undertake administrative functions related to the activities of SALIS. These activities, defined by the Head of School, may include participation in School meetings, engagement in meetings related to programmes, representing the School in marketing and recruitment of students, developing relationships with stakeholders, participating in Open Days, organisation of conferences, seminars, etc.
- Carrying out other duties such as chairing of programmes, serving on School or Faculty committees.
Qualifications and Experience
- Applicants for the position must hold an honours degree, should be qualified to a postgraduate level, and ideally have completed, or be in the process of completing, a doctoral qualification in an appropriate area.
- Additionally, they must have native or near-native proficiency in both the target language (Japanese) and English;
- Experience of teaching in Japanese Studies, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
- A strong research profile for the appointment level, as evidenced by research performance and publication to date;
- Knowledge of the national and EU research funding landscape;
- Excellent organisational skills; and excellent communication skills;
- Experience of teaching specialised translation from Japanese to English would be an advantage.
Essential Training
Training required for the role should be entered here. At a minimum, the following should be entered in addition to other applicable, role specific mandatory training:
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale:
Assistant Professor - €63,311 - €101,461
Lecturer Below Bar - €47,960 - €65,247 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale.
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy

Remote Working Policy
From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
