The School of Computing at Dublin City University has earned a strong reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Our existing undergrad programmes including, the B.Sc. in Computer Science, the BSc in Computing for Business and the B.Sc. in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are aimed at students who are interested in a career in data analytics and related data science roles. In addition, we also offer a range of innovative taught M.Sc. programmes aimed at producing graduates with the professional and personal skills most sought after in the Information Economy.
The School also enjoys a lively, engaging environment for research in many areas of computing, with numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. research students producing outputs of significance at the top international level. Role Profile
The School of Computing is seeking to appoint an exceptionally qualified candidate at the level of Associate Professor in Computing, to join its team of talented academics. The successful candidate will be recognised as a leader in their discipline, hold a reputation for academic excellence and have an extensive portfolio of internationally competitive research. They will be expected to provide leadership through active engagement in teaching and learning, research and scholarship and administration in the School, Faculty and University, as well as, make outstanding contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through innovative teaching, supervision of laboratory sessions, student mentoring and supervision of taught and research projects. They will be expected to influence research and scholarship and contribute to advancing the School’s research agenda, including building strong partnerships and collaborations with industry partners.
Reporting to the Head of School, the successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across the School and Faculty, including the School Teaching Convenor, the School Research Convenor and other senior post-holders. The role requires building strong, collaborative relationships with professional support staff, as well as technical and pedagogy specialists, alongside active engagement with key stakeholders both within and beyond DCU.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Teaching and Learning
To contribute to the teaching and learning activity of the School by:
- Preparing, delivering and assessing a range of core Computing subjects in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards.
- Contributing to the design and development of new or reconceptualised modules/programmes and resources, including non-traditional, innovative, student-centred and challenge-based learning activities, as well as off-campus aspects to the learning process.
- Contribute to the management and delivery of transnational educational programmes, including occasional on-site module delivery overseas.
- Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies that foster a deep approach to learning and equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners, including challenge-based learning, and concentrated and immersive learning experiences.
- Co-designing with other academics and industry partners a suite of tools and initiatives that support the development of transversal skills, and embedding transversal skills development, diagnostics and assessments into new and existing programmes.
- Supervising laboratory sessions, student mentoring and developing of virtual labs.
- Engagement with professional development for teaching, including certification of teaching quality and qualifications.
Research and Scholarship
To contribute to the research agenda and profile of the School by:
- Having clearly articulated research interests and research profile development plans that support the School’s current research priorities, and that will underpin senior modules and projects related to our programmes.
- Pursuing an active research agenda with ongoing impactful research publications in highly ranked international academic journals, in collaboration with colleagues in DCU and elsewhere.
- Actively searching out and applying for research funding and grants consistent with the School’s research agenda.
- Attracting and supervising postgraduate research students.
- Contributing to the research culture and environment in the School and where appropriate, working collaboratively on research initiatives.
Service and Contribution to the University and Society
To contribute to the management and administration of the School through:
- Engagement with strategic planning, quality review and improvement processes and external programme accreditations, via involvement with the appropriate professional institution(s) and associated initiatives.
- Development and delivery of the international activities of the School, including international travel to do so.
- Undertaking administrative functions related to the activities of the School, the Faculty, and the wider University. Such duties will be defined by the Head of School and may include some of the following: degree programme coordination; participation in School, Faculty and University committees; visits to students on industrial placement within the DCU INTRA programme; student recruitment.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent (NFQ Level 10) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years’ relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning experience at University level.
- Strong demonstrated, high-quality teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level, ideally including experience in module development, innovative pedagogies and/or assessments, international and/or online or technology-assisted teaching.
- Substantial evidence of a well-established and sustained research profile that demonstrates potential to establish an independent research programme and to attract research funding from competitive research funding schemes and/or industry.
- Ability to align strong research credentials to one or more of the following areas:
- Data Analytics / Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence / Statistical Data Modelling / Information Analytics and Retrieval.
- Software Engineering / Software Testing / Full-stack Development / Cryptography / Secure Programming / Agentic Programming.
- Demonstrable excellent interpersonal and communication skills consistent with the highest quality of teaching and learning, together with evidence of successful teamwork and collegial approach.
Essential Training
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training:

- AI Literacy
Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale:
Associate Professor - €91,090 - €120,061 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale.
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Remote Working Policy
DCU operates a Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro-rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'.
Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
