Background

NCAD DesignLabs are a series of collaborative design-led research spaces, whose shared focus is on the positive impact that applied design research can have on societies, cultures, economies and environments. NCAD DesignLabs: Health is home to a diverse group of designers and researchers dedicated to advancing the field of design for health. Working at the intersection of research, design practice and clinical expertise, we research, design and evaluate interventions across health and social care systems and community contexts. Researchers within NCAD DesignLabs: Health work closely with hospital, academic, industry, and community collaborators, including HSE Spark, Mater Hospital, Design Innovation Lab at St James’s Hospital, RCSI, and Tympany Medical. Through these partnerships, the Lab advances innovation and service transformation in health and social care, demonstrating the wider impact of design-led approaches. The Design Researcher will be joining DesignLabs: Health at an exciting time of growth in the Lab, and will join a broader team of researchers who work across large-scale national projects, including Better By Design: A HSE Spark X DesignLabs Health Collaboration, and Co-Create Ireland: Art and Design Research Network for Inclusive Futures.

Role Description

The Design Researcher will play a key role in shaping and delivering research within DesignLabs Health, working closely with the lab lead and other researchers within the lab. The role involves balancing academic research with design practice, contributing to design-led projects in health and social care settings and generating evidence of their impact through research and evaluation. The researcher will collaborate with health and social care professionals and other stakeholders to co-design, prototype, and evaluate design-led interventions, while disseminating impact through research outputs, publications, events, and public engagement.
