Research Fellow in Shared Mobility

Post Status: Specific Purpose Contract Full-time (commencing from September 2025) 

Research Group / Department / School: School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin 

Location: Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin College Green, Dublin 2, Ireland 

Reports to: Prof Brian Caulfield 

Salary: Appointment will be made on the IUA Research Fellow scale at a point in line with Government Pay Policy €46,305 appointment will be made no higher than point 2 

Hours of Work: 39 Hours per week

 

Post Summary 

This project will focus on private workplaces in Dublin and Limerick and will provide access to the bike library (bike sharing) to a selected cohort of employees while also engaging a control group within the same workplaces to achieve an objective assessment of the intervention. The pilot will be assessed from a quantitative and qualitative perspective and policy recommendations will be prepared based on the findings with a focus on facilitating the replication at city and national levels. Each bike will be instrumented with GPS sensors to understand preferred cycling routes. The data will be used to inform the local authority and decision makers and provide them with useful insights to deploy cycling infrastructure where needed by the local community. The qualitative assessment will be carried out with questionnaires and focus groups which will allow to understand effective strategies to removing barriers to the uptake of e-micromobility solutions. An app will be also developed and deployed to collect further data and deploy behavioural nudging interventions. The research that will be conducted over a 36-month project.

 

Standard Duties and Responsibilities of the Post 

• Manage and conduct the research as directed by the project coordinator 

• Collect and analyse data 

• Conduct a comprehensive literature review and case studies 

• Engage with stakeholders and participate in outreach activities

 

Person Specification 

Qualifications and experience 

• A PhD or equivalent in engineering, economics, computer science, transportation or other closely related fields 

• 1 - 2 years postdoctoral research experience • GIS experience 

• Excellent record of peer-reviewed scientific publication 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills 

• Ability to work independently and to efficiently deliver results on time 

• Ability to work as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment
