Assistant Professor in Genetics

Post Status Tenure Track - This position is Tenure Track position which is 5-years in the first instance, permanency is subject to satisfying the tenure requirements.

 

The Purpose of the Role 

The primary purpose of the Assistant Professor position is to undertake research and teaching in the School of Genetics and Microbiology, Trinity College Dublin, predominantly in the Discipline of Genetics. The role will involve teaching at undergraduate level for the biological streams, and where appropriate, providing postgraduate teaching via postgraduate programmes in which the School of Genetics and Microbiology participates. Another key aspect of the role is the development of an active research programme in the School, contributing to the dynamic research environment, adding to the postgraduate ecosystem in the School, and generating significant and internationally recognized research outputs. The Assistant Professor has direct reporting lines to the Head of School and Head of Discipline. The appointment offers an excellent opportunity for career development in a lively, friendly, research and teaching focused work environment.

 

Context 

The School of Genetics and Microbiology is seeking an Assistant Professor who will work as part of the School team to achieve excellence in research and teaching. The position is within the academic staff in Genetics, however, may also involve some teaching in Microbiology. The School currently delivers three undergraduate moderatorships (Genetics, Human Genetics and Microbiology), provides an MSc in Genomic Medicine and participates in two additional MSc programmes. The School has 23 academic staff, 9 technical, 4 administrative and 40 research staff, supports approximately 140 undergraduates in the two Sophister years, interacts with and teaches many more undergraduates in the Junior and Senior Fresh years in the biological streams and has approximately 60 full time post-graduate students. The School is extremely research active, hosting a significant number of research active teams supported by national and international research awards. The Assistant Professor will be central to the core mission of Genetics, contributing and growing the research and teaching excellence in the Discipline and School. A key mission of the School is to provide an inclusive, welcoming and supportive environment for staff and students.

 

Person Requirements 

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance. 

Qualifications 

• The candidate should have a STEM undergraduate degree - essential 

• The candidate should have a PhD and an accomplished track record of research in the field of genetics, molecular genetics or an allied molecular biology discipline with published peer reviewed research findings in internationally recognized journals - essential 

• Have at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in a relevant field of research - essential
