Purpose of the Role
The Head of Learning & Organisational Development plays a central role in delivering people-development and organisational-development initiatives across Trinity College Dublin. The post holder provides senior leadership for the Learning & Development, Organisation Development & Organisation Design portfolio and oversees the day-to-day functioning of the L&ODD team.
Working closely with colleagues across HR, academic units, and professional services, the role leads the development and operational rollout of key people initiatives including performance conversations, cultural and wellbeing initiatives, leadership and management development and career development frameworks. This includes contributing to related policy development, applying structured change management approaches, and supporting managers and teams through new processes and ways of working.
The post holder also oversees planning, resource and vendor management, and alignment of L&ODD activities with wider HR systems and organisational structures. Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-management skills are essential, as the role requires close engagement with senior stakeholders, service users, and external networks. This is a senior administrative post focused on operational leadership, project and programme delivery, policy and change-management support, and cross-functional coordination.
Context
The Trinity Human Resources Department is a professional unit of approximately 60 staff, providing services across all aspects of the employee lifecycle. Within HR, the Learning & Organisational Design & Development (L&ODD) function supports strategic capability development, leadership and management development, organisational development, organisational design, employee engagement, and culture transformation initiatives across the University. This post forms part of the HR Senior Management Team.
The L&ODD team works closely with colleagues across HR and the wider University to ensure the effective delivery of high-quality learning programmes, development initiatives, and organisational change activities. The Head of Learning & Organisational Development reports directly to the Head of Culture & Organisation Development, who leads the University’s learning, cultural transformation, organisational development, and organisational design agenda at a strategic level.
The post holder will have direct line-management responsibility for a team of 5, providing senior leadership for the L&D team and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the L&ODD function.
Qualifications
• Level 8 University degree in Human Resources, Learning & Development, Organisational Psychology, Education, Business, or a related field or relevant experience (essential).
• Postgraduate level 9 qualification in L&D, OD, HR, Organisational Psychology, Coaching, or a related discipline (highly desirable).
• CIPD membership (desirable).
