The Purpose of the Role

This post is to support the Discipline of Anatomy’s Teaching and Research perspectives, by joining a dynamic and expanding health science department. The role encompasses all areas of technical support for anatomical practical teaching and research including undergraduate and postgraduate projects. Technical service also includes the maintenance of the Disciplines laboratories, the preservation, preparation and care of human cadavers, and the delivery of practical class teaching.

Context

This is a unique opportunity to join a multi-faceted Discipline in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin. Anatomy is a cornerstone of medical and health sciences education, and the Discipline of Anatomy teaches students of Medicine, Dentistry, Human Health and Disease, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Speech and Language Studies, Neuroscience and Radiation Therapy, and hosts a postgraduate sports and exercise medicine taught MSc program. Teaching is underpinned by a human donor program and is supplemented by modern pedagogical resources. The level and depth of the anatomy taught varies and is individually tailored to the specific professional needs of the students attending. Research themes in the Discipline of Anatomy lie across the health sciences in neuroscience, exercise, medical education, and immunology. Expertise in human anatomy and / or research is desirable in this post. Additional training will be provided if required. The Discipline is staffed by 5 Assistant Professors, a Teaching Fellow, 3 Demonstrators, a Chief Technical Officer 1, a Senior Technical Officer, and an Administrative Officer. The Discipline hosts a tissue research laboratory, a modern dissection theatre, a preparation laboratory, an embalming laboratory, a mortuary, and a human performance laboratory and is located within the state-of-the-art Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute.

The role reports to the Chief Technical Officer 1 and Head of Discipline and will work within the technical team to support the Disciplines teaching and research perspectives. As the technical team is often the first point of contact for academic staff, teaching assistants and students in the labs, the role holder will work in a cooperative environment with students, staff, and external colleagues to provide a range of technical, professional, efficient, and welcoming services to all laboratory users.

This is a dynamic post, and the appointed candidate will have the opportunity to be centrally involved in all aspects of anatomical education and research working with a committed team of technicians, researchers, and academics. This post will also provide the candidate with the opportunity to work across the School, Faculty, and College to share ideas and contribute positively to university life. They will be expected to carry out the principal duties listed below as well as engage in further activities that may be assigned by Chief Technical Officer 1, Head of Discipline, and Head of School.

Qualifications

• Qualifications for New Staff (from 1 January 2007): entry to the profession will require a Honors degree in a life sciences area ideally related to the anatomical sciences

• Relevant postgraduate qualifications are desirable.

• National Certificate on Entry: qualifications for Existing Staff (before 1 January 2007)

• The preferred candidate, if an MSc holder on entry, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience, (that must be relevant), may be appointed at Senior Technical Officer level.
