Assistant Professor in Physiology

Post status: Tenure Track - This position is Tenure Track position which is 5-years in the first instance, permanency is subject to satisfying the tenure requirements.

 

The Purpose of the Role

The School of Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Physiology. Applications are sought from candidates at an early stage in their career with proven potential for research and teaching excellence. The successful applicant will be a full member of the academic staff in the School and of the Discipline of Physiology. They will work with other academic staff, technical staff, administrative staff, researchers, and students in a collaborative and international environment for research and scholarly endeavours. They will be able to avail of state-of-the-art facilities offered by the School and the Trinity Biomedical Research Institute (TBSI) and Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN).

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Discipline and the School of Medicine. The appointee will be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary curricular teaching, supervision, and mentoring. Candidates will have a proposed research programme that complements and strengthens existing initiatives in the School of Medicine and the Discipline of Physiology. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to engage and contribute to undergoing research initiatives in the School of Medicine and the affiliated research institutes and centres. 

 

Context

The School seeks to appoint a new staff member at Assistant Professor level to be part of the Discipline of Physiology. The successful candidate will lead a cutting-edge research group, as well as contribute to and enrich the physiology curriculum across associated degree programmes. They will have a research doctorate or equivalent in a relevant area  of Physiology or a closely related area. Candidates should have a proven track record of research, an ability to engage effectively in academic administration and an ability to contribute to ongoing course development. The Discipline of Physiology has a strong track record in the areas of Neuroscience and Exercise Physiology. However, we welcome applications from individuals with a track record in any area of cellular or systems Physiology. 

Medicine in Trinity College, The University of Dublin, has a rich heritage that dates to 1711. The School of Medicine is recognised as one of the world’s top medical schools and is ranked in the range 51-100 in the most recent QS World Rankings by subject. 

The school operates across multiple sites, including the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, St James’s Hospital and Tallaght Hospital, delivering multidisciplinary education across all levels of healthcare, and carrying out world-class research. The school has 22 Disciplines/Academic Units and has approximately 1400 undergraduate students and 500 postgraduate students. 

As part of the School of Medicine, the Discipline of Physiology delivers undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to combined 12+ degree courses including Medicine, Physiotherapy, Natural Sciences, Neuroscience, Dental Science, Radiation Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Human Health & Disease. Teaching is largely done through lectures and laboratory practicals. The School of Medicine is an international leader in postgraduate education and provides a vibrant environment for postgraduate study. The school offers over 20 taught MSc/Diploma programmes spanning a broad spectrum of medical and scientific disciplines and research students work towards the degrees of PhD, MSc, MD or MCh.

Qualifications

  • Excellent academic record and have completed a Ph.D. in Physiology or closely related area (Essential)
  • Academic publications in peer reviewed international journals and/or publications of equal standing of recognised originality and value (Essential).
