The Purpose of the Role 

The School of Chemistry invites applications for a position of Assistant Professor in Medicinal Chemistry. Applications are sought from candidates at an early stage in their career with proven potential for research and teaching excellence in Medicinal and Organic Chemistry. The successful applicant will be a full member of the academic staff in the School and of the Organic, Medicinal and Biological Discipline. They will work with other academic staff, researchers, and students in a lively, collaborative, and international environment for research and scholarly endeavours. They will be able to avail of state-of-the-art facilities offered by the School and by the Trinity Biomedical Research Institute (TBSI). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute at all levels to undergraduate teaching within the Discipline and to interdisciplinary teaching across both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Candidates will have a proposed research programme in Medicinal Chemistry, with a synthetic and/or computational focus that strengthens existing activities, which currently have a broad focus in areas of Medicinal Chem, Supramolecular chemistry and Sensors, Catalysis, Tetrapyrroles, Peptide and DNA chemistry and Chemical Biology. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to engage and contribute to ongoing interdisciplinary research initiatives in the School of Chemistry and research institutes.

 

Context 

The School seeks to appoint a new staff member at Assistant Professor level in the discipline of Organic, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry. The successful candidate will lead a research programme at the cutting edge of Medicinal chemistry, as well as contributing to and enriching the Medicinal and Organic chemistry curriculum across all degree programmes. They will have a research doctorate or equivalent in a relevant area of Medicinal and Organic Chemistry and evidence of a strong academic background in Chemistry/Medicinal Chemistry/Organic Chemistry at undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral level. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated their potential for carrying out original investigations in the field of Medicinal Chemistry. 

Chemistry in Trinity College, the University of Dublin, has a rich heritage that dates back to 1711. Chemistry at Trinity is ranked among the top 100 in the most recent QS World Rankings by subject. Research and Teaching activities in the School (http://www.chemistry.tcd.ie/) are housed in several locations across the College. The research of many members of the School is affiliated with and underpins activity in the Trinity Research Institutes and Centres, such as the Advanced Materials and Bio-Engineering Research Centre (AMBER), the Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals (SSPC) and the Centre for Chemical Synthesis and Chemical Biology (the CSCB). 

The School currently counts with 23 academic staff, 10 technical and attendant staff and 4 administrative staff. There are approximately 70 registered postgraduate students undertaking PhD degrees by research, 50 postdoctoral research fellows (including research assistants) and 1100 undergraduate students studying and doing research in Chemistry within the School. The School is organised around three disciplines (Physical, Organic and Inorganic) which serve to coordinate teaching and delivery of its undergraduate degree programme in Chemical Sciences and of postgraduate programmes in Chemistry (PhD) and Energy Science (MSc). Staff in all disciplines are extremely research active with a first-rate publication record in high impact International scientific journals. Members of the School are in receipt of significant and diverse research funding from National (SFI, EI), European (Horizon 2020, EIT), and Industrial sources, including 8 ERC awards. The School has an interdisciplinary research ethos and collaborates with other Schools within TCD, including Pharmacy and Biochemistry & Immunology. Staff in the School contribute and support research in interdisciplinary institutes, such as CRANN (Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices), Ireland’s flagship nanoscience research institute; and TBSI (Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute). The School has a strong international profile and a long track record in education and training of researchers from all nationalities.

Qualifications 

You will have: 

• A research doctorate or equivalent in a relevant area of Medicinal and Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Essential). 

• Exhibited a strong academic background in Chemistry/Medicinal Chemistry/Organic Chemistry at undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral level, and demonstrated potential for carrying out original investigations in the fields of Medicinal and Organic Chemistry (Essential). 

• Preferably have at least two years of postdoctoral experience.
