The Purpose of the Role
The School of Nursing and Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in Midwifery to contribute to Midwifery teaching, research and administrative activities in the school. The post of Associate Professor in Midwifery arises from the intent to strengthen and advance the School’s already leading position in education and research for Midwifery and maternity care in contemporary society, nationally and internationally.
Context and Background to the Post
The School provides world-leading educational programmes to prepare midwifery, nursing and other health professionals to meet the needs and inform the future development of national and international healthcare and midwifery and maternal health, as detailed in our Strategic Plan 2023-2030: ‘Transforming healthcare and creating a better future for all’. These educational programmes are aligned with our cutting-edge collaborative research across our research centres and research themes, as detailed in the School of Nursing and Midwifery Research Strategy 2023-2030.
We recognise the distinct nature of the Midwifery profession and are dedicated to Midwifery practice, education and research. The Midwifery team, together with colleagues from the nursing disciplines and other professions throughout college and elsewhere, are dedicated to achieving excellence in original and sustainable childbirth, reproduction and maternity care research. A highly successful research team, we prioritise research collaboration with women and families, clinical partners in our linked maternity hospitals, national and international colleagues, and industry, to identify research questions of local, national and global significance. We are seeking a motivated and talented individual to become an integral part of the midwifery team, who will sustain and advance existing and new research priorities with the Trinity Centre for Maternity Care Research (TCMCR) and/or the development of new cutting edge maternity care and maternal health funded research strands. The person appointed will be expected to provide leadership in policy and practice development at national and regional levels.
The successful applicant will have a proven track record in research and education in Midwifery and will be expected to provide leadership in and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the profession of Midwifery, interdisciplinary curricular teaching, and supervision and mentoring. this post provides an exciting opportunity to advance developments in Midwifery, maternity care and maternal health, which are of strategic focus for the profession and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The successful candidate will be expected to have a depth of knowledge pertinent to the role and will be expected to attract research funding and attain scholarly publication. The individual will also be required to complement and enhance the existing strengths of the Midwifery profession and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The person appointed will be able to avail of an outstanding environment for education, research and scholarly activities. They will work closely with the Head of School, the Head of Discipline and Director of Midwifery programmes, Professor in Midwifery, Professor of Maternal Health, TCMCR, and other discipline members.
Person Specification for Associate Professor in Midwifery
Qualifications
- PhD degree (essential)
- Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or relevant professional body in their jurisdiction (essential)
- Registered, or eligible to register on the Nurse or Midwife Tutor’s division with the NMBI or hold an equivalent teaching and learning qualification (desirable).
- At least five years clinical experience in Midwifery practice (desirable).
