The Purpose of the Role:
Applications are invited for the above post, which will support the clinical, educational and research activities of the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) at Trinity College Dublin and its associated locations. GBHI works to improve brain health and reduce the scale and impact of dementia worldwide, by training the next generations of Atlantic Fellows in Equity in Brain Health, as well as supporting innovative clinical services and contributing to word-class research (https://www.gbhi.org/).
The Lecturer Registrar in Global Brain Health will support the Clinical Lead (Prof. Iracema Leroi) to develop and clinically contribute to innovative Brain Health clinical services in St James’s Hospital, working closely with relevant allied health professionals and other services. The successful candidate will also support the Educational Lead (Prof. Roman Romero-Ortuno) to organise, coordinate, and deliver the yearly programme of Clinical and Lived Experience (CLE) rotationsthat the Atlantic Fellows in Equity in Brain Health undertake in St James’s Hospital and other clinical sites.
The Lecturer registrar will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate course development/delivery, in areas relevant to Brain Health. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to engage in research and pursue a part-time postgraduate research degree (e.g. M.D.), where relevant. The appointment is available from 11th July 2022 and is offered on a one-year fixed term contract basis with a potential for renewal up to a maximum of 3 years. The successful candidates must be registered with the Irish Medical Council upon commencement of post and be cleared from a Garda vetting and Occupational health perspective by St James’s Hospital. The appointee will receive an honorary clinical appointment (Registrar/Specialist Registrar) in St James’s Hospital.
Main Responsibilities:
Clinical
• Engage in clinical activities as directed by the Lead with appropriate clinical supervision.
• Tentative work schedule to be developed and agreed;
• Possibility of developing a ‘brain health clinic’ with a focus on dementia prevention and supporting patients in the very early stages of dementia or neurodegenerative disorders;
• Participation in MDTs/consensus meetings with other clinicians and clinical services;
• Co-working with allied health professionals and other services relevant to brain health.
Education
• Organise, coordinate, and deliver the yearly programme of Clinical and Lived Experience (CLE) rotations that the Atlantic Fellows in Equity in Brain Health undertake in St James’s Hospital and other clinical sites.
• Positively contribute to and participate in the Learning Experience of the Atlantic Fellows in Equity in Brain Health in Trinity College Dublin.
• Contribute to undergraduate course development/delivery in Brain Health topics (e.g. Trinity Elective, undergraduate medical curriculum).
• Contribute to postgraduate course development/delivery in Brain Health (e.g. PGCert/MSc development).
• Contribute to outreach educational/Public Patient Involvement (PPI) activities.
• Engage in monitoring and evaluation activities regarding the Learning Experience of the Atlantic Fellows in Equity in Brain Health.
• Other duties which may arise from time to time in the context of responsibility to Atlantic Fellows in Equity in Brain Health.
Research
• Engage in research activities under the direction of the Leads. Enrol on a part-time postgraduate research degree programme (e.g. M.D.) where relevant.
Person Requirements
The role-holder will require the following:
Qualifications:
• A primary medical degree and a medical or health professional qualification – Essential
• Registration with the Irish Medical Council – Essential
Qualifications - desirable
• An MD, PhD or other postgraduate qualification related to medical education
• MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification
• Has completed basic or higher specialist training in Psychiatry, Neurology, Geriatric Medicine or other Brain Health-relevant specialty
Knowledge and Experience:
• Curriculum development and teaching/lecturing experience
• Experience of using new teaching media and innovative teaching methods
Skills:
• Excellent clinical skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an ability for "clinical bedside" teaching in the hospital environment
• Candidates will undertake a research commitment, therefore previous research experience and associated skills are required
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
•Excellent organisational and administrative skills, e.g., ability to set clinical rotations/exams/objective clinical examinations (OSCE), etc.
• A commitment to student/fellow care
• Ability to establish targets and goals to support GBHI and College strategies
• Have good knowledge of GBHI and College
• Career driven, enthusiastic and motivated
