PhD Studentship

Post Status: Full-time. 

Research Group / Department / School: Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin

Location: School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin College Green, Dublin 2, Ireland 

Reports to: Dr. David Igoe 

Terms & Conditions: Stipend of €25,000 per annum for four years and full-time tuition fee cost for four years will be covered 

Hours of Work: 36 hours per week

 

Post Summary 

The Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, invites applications for a PhD Researcher to join the geotechnical research group as part of a Sustainable Energy of Ireland funded research project “Ground Rigid Install Pile Anchor – GRIP Anchor”. The project is being led by Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) with the aim of undertaking laboratory testing and numerical modelling of a novel type of non-grouted rock anchor for use with floating offshore wind turbines. The successful candidates will join a vibrant research group at Trinity College Dublin, working at the cutting edge of offshore wind energy research. The group is a multidisciplinary team with experience and expertise in the fields of geotechnical engineering, field and laboratory testing, grain-scale mechanics and numerical modelling.

 

Standard Duties and Responsibilities of the Post 

This PhD will focus on laboratory scale testing of the GRIP anchor (including fatigue testing) along with numerical modelling using the Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM). 

 

The general responsibilities of the PhD student are as follows: 

• undertaking research based on a plan agreed with their supervisor; 

• regular meeting with their supervisor; 

• undertaking appropriate skills training as required by the PhD; 

• maintaining the progress of their work; 

• taking the initiative in raising problems or difficulties; 

• Deciding when to submit their thesis/portfolio, within the constraints of the University's Regulations

 

Qualifications 

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must possess a 1st class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject in Engineering/Science. Where applicants have an MSc degree, a distinction is required.
