Post Summary 

This PhD position forms part of an interdisciplinary research programme, Trinity Research Doctorate Award (TRDA), at Trinity College Dublin, (TCD), investigating hereditary cardiac conditions associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD). The project focuses on ion-channel diseases including Long QT Syndrome, Brugada Syndrome, and Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia. These conditions have a significant impact on affected individuals as well as their relatives at risk of disease development as it may often be difficult to predict individual risk of SCD and adverse disease complications. 

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research environment with Primary Investigators (PI) representing clinical cardiology, biomedical engineering, social sciences, and psychology. The PI’s are key experts in their fields of research and based at TCD, St. James’s University Hospital, Children’s Health Ireland, Crumlin and the clinic for hereditary cardiac conditions (Cardiac Risk in The Young, CRY) at Tallaght University Hospital. 

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to highly clinically relevant and patient-centred research with the aim of improving risk stratification, clinical management and counselling of individuals at risk of SCD. The research project takes advantage of a large collection of affected families which have already been clinically and genetically characterised.

Person Specification 

The successful candidate would have experience in cardiology with an interest in: 

• Hereditary arrhythmogenic cardiac conditions 

• Clinical and genetic investigations of affected families 

• Participation in the development of novel algorithms for interpretation of ECG’s in relation to ion-channel diseases 

• Interdisciplinary and collaborative research 

Qualifications 

Essential 

• Qualified as a Medical Doctor 

• Registration with the Irish Medical Council or equivalent regulatory body 

• Holds an Irish work permit
