The Purpose of the Role 

The Department of Philosophy, School of Social Sciences and Philosophy is seeking to appoint two Teaching Fellows in Philosophy, to commence on 4th August 2026. The Department primarily has teaching needs in Introductory Logic, and in the History of Philosophy (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern). Successful candidates will be able to offer teaching across several core areas of Analytic Philosophy, with teaching competency in Metaphysics being an advantage.

 

Context 

The School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, founded in 2005, comprises the Departments of Economics, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. With over 115 academic and professional staff, the School holds an international reputation for research excellence and is committed to disseminating its expertise to benefit the wider community. It has a distinguished track record of securing major research funding, including ERC, IRC Laureate, and Horizon Europe awards. As one of the largest Schools in the University, it is recognised for its teaching excellence and is home to flagship undergraduate programmes, including PPES (Philosophy, Political Science, Economics and Sociology), the high-demand Bachelor in Economic and Social Sciences (BESS), and Trinity Joint Honours programmes across its disciplines. The School also delivers eight taught postgraduate programmes and supports a vibrant cohort of over 80 postgraduate researchers undertaking structured PhDs. 

Graduates of the School are highly employable and progress into leadership roles across business, industry, public service, and international organisations. Each Department is ranked first in Ireland, with Political Science in the top 50 globally, Philosophy in the top 100 globally, and Economics and Sociology in the top 150 (QS 2025). Qualifications

Essential 

• An excellent academic record including a PhD in Philosophy (or cognate discipline). 

• A significant track record in the teaching of undergraduate Philosophy by lectures, tutorials or seminars. 

• An ability to lead and deliver undergraduate modules in Introductory Logic OR the History of Philosophy (Ancient, Medieval, or Modern). 

• An ability to lead and deliver undergraduate modules in at least one other core area of Analytic Philosophy.
