The Purpose of the Role
The School of Physics at Trinity College, Dublin is seeking candidates for the position of Teaching Fellow in Physics (0.8 FTE). The appointment will commence on August 1 st 2026 and is expected to be for a duration of one year. This is a teaching position but involves opportunities to take part in the school’s research activities. Successful candidates will be required to contribute at all levels of teaching and supervision undertaken by the School within their areas of competence.
Context
Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, invites applications for a specific purpose teaching Fellow post in the School of Physics. The successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate programmes delivered by the School. The Teaching Fellow will take responsibility for established modules and will help shape each module within the parameters of the syllabus. The Teaching Fellow will report to the Head of School/Director of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate) and work closely with academic coordinators and professional and support staff within the School. The Teaching Fellow will support student’s development of fundamental competencies in physical experimentation, instrumentation, analysis and safety as well as helping students to connect these skills to theoretical concepts taught in lectures. The successful candidate will be part of a vibrant academic community in the School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin. They will be working in a multi-national team of exceptional scholars and will have an opportunity to develop research-led teaching at Ireland’s highest ranked university. The salary will be on the merged Teaching Fellow pay scale (€43,425 – 55,227).
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
• Be expected to teach modules in physics as assigned by the Head of School/Director of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate). (e.g. Junior Freshman Waves and Optics).
• Support the delivery of undergraduate physics laboratory classes including engaging with students and teaching assistants and monitoring student attendance and performance.
• Have responsibility for the design and coordination of each module, delivery of lectures and tutorials, student engagement and marking of assignments and examinations.
• Undertake student supervision at undergraduate level.
• Undertake teaching administrative duties as assigned by the Head of School/ School Manager.
• Engage with School and College activities and initiatives such as outreach events and seminars.

Qualifications
• PhD in Physics or a related subject (Essential).
Knowledge & Experience
The successful candidate will have:
• Experience in teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate levels (Desirable).
• Evidence of research achievement, relative to career stage,
• Ability to teach both larger (i.e. over 100 students) and smaller classes (seminars, tutorials) (desirable).
• Experience supervising undergraduate labs and ensuring safe, effective practical sessions.
• Understanding of experimental methods, data analysis, and scientific reporting.
• Ability to use digital tools for teaching, such as simulations, coding platforms (Python/Matlab), or online assessment systems (desirable).
• Familiarity with inclusive teaching practices and accessibility considerations.
• Experience aligning learning outcomes with programme requirements and accreditation standards (desirable).
Skills
• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
• Planning and organisational skills, particularly coordinating processes and systems.
• Skill in explaining complex concepts clearly to diverse student groups.
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment and support students in hands-on environments.
• Ability to work collaboratively with academic, technical, and administrative staff.
• Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle).
