Research Assistant Technical APC Microbiome Ireland

This position, funded by APC Microbiome Ireland, is dedicated to supporting the Biological Services Unit (BSU) at University College Cork. The role is integral to maintaining the functionality and compliance of preclinical research facilities, with responsibilities spanning equipment maintenance, technical support, and safety oversight.

The successful candidate will be responsible for executing routine maintenance tasks on specialised preclinical equipment and animal housing systems. Regular inspections will be conducted to identify and resolve issues that could impact research activities, and the candidate will work collaboratively with the BSU team to establish and follow preventive maintenance schedules.

A key aspect of the role involves diagnosing and troubleshooting technical problems related to laboratory equipment and facility infrastructure. The candidate will liaise closely with the BSU technical team to implement effective solutions that support uninterrupted research operations.

Accurate documentation is essential, and the candidate will be expected to maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and facility inspections. Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and record-keeping requirements for preclinical environments is a critical component of the role.

The position also includes project support responsibilities, such as assisting with the installation and commissioning of new laboratory equipment and facility systems. The candidate will provide technical assistance to BSU researchers, contributing to the smooth execution of ongoing research projects.

Inventory oversight is another important duty, involving the management of spare parts and maintenance supplies. The candidate will coordinate procurement and ensure the timely availability of essential components to support facility operations.

Safety and environmental compliance are paramount. The candidate must adhere to strict safety protocols within laboratory and animal housing environments, prepare permits, and gather necessary documentation to facilitate contractor access. Any safety hazards or concerns must be promptly reported to BSU management.

Finally, the role requires physical capability, including the ability to lift and move heavy equipment, and a willingness to work in laboratory and animal facility settings.

UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.
