Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex medical challenge which diminishes quality of life and leads to severe impairments, largely because the central nervous system has a limited capacity to replace lost neurons, repair damaged axons, or re-establish functional circuits. The pathophysiological mechanism associated with SCI involves a multi-step cascade of events; following the primary mechanical lesion, a secondary inflammatory reaction results in an influx of peripheral inflammatory cells as well as activation of resident microglia. Although recent experimental approaches have shown some beneficial effect in preclinical models, successful translation into clinical trials has been limited. Thus, further mechanistic insights of key biological questions relating to the inflammatory response, are required prior to clinical translation. By using both in vitro and in vivo techniques, the successful candidate will work together with a team of researchers to help identify and validate key factors involved in driving immune cell activation states after SCI.
