Research Fellow in AI for Healthcare (1 FTE) – ArcHub ICUSafeNotes-School of Computer Science 011287

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for an appointment as a full-time fixed-term position as a Research Fellow  under the direction of  Professor Michael Madden in the School of Computer Science  at the University of Galway, Ireland. The work will be conducted in collaboration with Dr Bairbre McNicholas and Professor John Laffey in the School of Medicine. Funding is available immediately to August 2026, with a possibility of an extension for a further 12 months.

The project is called ICUSafeNotes, which is led by Dr McNicholas. The project is part of the  ARC Hub for HealthTech that is led by University of Galway, in partnership with ATU and RCSI. The ARC Hub overall aims to fast-track research breakthroughs into commercial healthcare solutions. In the ICUSafeNotes project, we are conducting research and development of multimodal machine learning models that includes ICU note summarisation and analysis of other medical data, to support clinical decision making. This builds on our prior research in which we have assessing the usefulness of a large language model to query and summarize unstructured medical notes in intensive care, as well as our many years of research in applying machine learning in a variety of applications related to patients in intensive care.

The successful researcher will be based in the Machine Learning Research Group in the School of Computer Science, working under the direction of Professor Michael Madden. The group focuses on new theoretical advances in machine learning, motivated by addressing important data-driven applications in medicine, engineering, and the physical sciences,  on the basis that important applications foster novel algorithms which in turn enable new applications.

Salary: Research Fellow salary scale €65,889 - €86,014 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 5th September 2025.  It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date.
