This position, funded by APC Microbiome Ireland, is dedicated to supporting the Biological Services Unit (BSU) at University College Cork. The role is integral to maintaining the functionality and compliance of preclinical research facilities, with responsibilities spanning equipment maintenance, technical support, and safety oversight.

The successful candidate will be responsible for executing routine maintenance tasks on specialised preclinical equipment and animal housing systems. Regular inspections will be conducted to identify and resolve issues that could impact research activities, and the candidate will work collaboratively with the BSU team to establish and follow preventive maintenance schedules.

A key aspect of the role involves diagnosing and troubleshooting technical problems related to laboratory equipment and facility infrastructure. The candidate will liaise closely with the BSU technical team to implement effective solutions that support uninterrupted research operations.

Accurate documentation is essential, and the candidate will be expected to maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and facility inspections. Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and record-keeping requirements for preclinical environments is a critical component of the role.

The position also includes project support responsibilities, such as assisting with the installation and commissioning of new laboratory equipment and facility systems. The candidate will provide technical assistance to BSU researchers, contributing to the smooth execution of ongoing research projects.

Inventory oversight is another important duty, involving the management of spare parts and maintenance supplies. The candidate will coordinate procurement and ensure the timely availability of essential components to support facility operations.

Safety and environmental compliance are paramount. The candidate must adhere to strict safety protocols within laboratory and animal housing environments, prepare permits, and gather necessary documentation to facilitate contractor access. Any safety hazards or concerns must be promptly reported to BSU management.

Finally, the role requires physical capability, including the ability to lift and move heavy equipment, and a willingness to work in laboratory and animal facility settings.

UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.

Background & Role
The School of Chemical Sciences (SCS) at Dublin City University (DCU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher as part of a new collaborative project between DCU, HT Materials Science Ltd (HTMS) and Exergyn Ltd. This project, DLCool, has been awarded under the seventh round of the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF7). The main goal of the DLCool project is to accelerate the development and deployment of next generation heat transfer fluids for use in solid-state heat pumps, direct to chip cooling and other applications, such as EVs and battery storage systems.
The focus of the successful candidate will be to develop AI tools which accelerate the identification of candidate fluids, by applying machine learning, in particular physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), to optimise the thermal properties of nanofluids for use in direct cooling systems. Expertise in the development and application of PINNs in material design is an essential pre-requisite for this role.
As an industry-academia collaboration, the candidate will work on real industry problems and contribute to developing technologies which will have a profound effect on environmental challenges worldwide.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), the researcher will work as part of a cross-functional collaborative team. You will be dealing with scientists to understand their requirements, and sources of data and knowledge in relation to materials, processes, ageing, reliability and other characteristics. You will build and test models in an iterative way to achieve the overall goal of reducing experimental time and improve accuracy. Other duties include:


• Conduct and deliver a programme of research to the highest standard under the supervision and direction of the PI.
• Support the PI and the industry partners team on project planning to ensure all milestones and deliverables are met, particularly regarding developing the ML models to guide selection of nanofluids with optimal thermal, viscosity and related properties.
• Support the work of other PD researchers and PhD students.
• Supervise and assist undergraduate students working in this area with their research (4th year projects).
• Provide weekly updates and a monthly written report on progress.
• Engage in teaching and teaching support as assigned by the Head of School under the direction of the PI.
• Produce a full report and presentation at the end of the contract.
• Support the team’s ongoing communication and dissemination efforts including social media and project website.
• Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders including industry and academic partners/ collaborators.
• Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, the School or Research Centre, or the University.
• Carry out administrative work associated with the programme of research as necessary.
 

Minimum Criteria
Essential
• The successful candidate must have a PhD in computational chemistry, machine learning or a related area.
• In addition, have expertise in one or more of the following areas: developing PINN models, modelling carbon-based nanomaterials, modelling nanomaterial dispersity and viscosity, predicting thermal conductivity and the DMTA cycle.
• Must have demonstrable high-level Python programming skills.
 

Desirable
The successful candidate will ideally possess the following:
• Postdoctoral experience in developing PINN models to predict the thermal properties of nanofluids.
• Experience developing, benchmarking and implementing LLM and other ML models for materials studies.
• Experience working as part of an industry-academic consortium.
• Strong work ethic, creative thinking and dedication to problem solving.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Good organisational skills with an ability to prioritise and work independently.
• Proven ability to work in a team and innovate in a multi-stakeholder environment.
 

Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:
 

Discipline knowledge and Research skills – Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that discipline


Understanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications

Managing & Leadership skills - Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate students

Salary Scale:

The post holder will play an important role in ensuring that the curriculum continues to meet professional and regulatory body requirements and keeps abreast with changing approaches to service delivery within the health care sector.


The post holder will have an influential role, supporting the BSc Occupational Therapy programme, in ongoing development and innovation, in the delivery of clinical skills teaching, clinical supervision and through student support. They will support the Head of Discipline of Occupational Therapy in establishing new opportunities in Occupational Therapy education and research.

The Purpose of the Role

This position is to provide maternity leave cover in the area of practice of pharmacy, with key responsibilities to support the 5-year Pharmacy (Integrated) programme, and to strengthen the School’s existing teaching and research in the pharmacy practice area. 

This position supports the 5-year Integrated Pharmacy Programme, specifically in the activities of APPEL (Affiliation for Pharmacy Practice Experiential Learning). APPEL is a joint initiative of the three Schools of Pharmacy (Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Cork (UCC)) to coordinate workplace-based learning and assessment. The position would suit an individual who has an interest in engaging with the profession, participating in the development and management of practice placements as part of the Integrated Pharmacy Programme, as well as contributing to teaching and undertaking practice of pharmacy and/or pedagogic research.

 

Person Requirements 

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance in the role. 

Qualifications 

• Must be registered or eligible to register as a pharmacist with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland. 

• Must hold or be undertaking a suitable postgraduate qualification relevant to this position. 

• Must have patient care/clinical experience in the community and/or hospital pharmacy setting. 

• Must have experience of developing pharmacy practice modules for students on placements.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and examining at all levels; engage in associated research; assist with administration and the development of the Accountancy and Finance Discipline and J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics; and contribute to the intellectual life of the University and the wider community.  Applicants must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a willingness to take initiative. In addition to having relevant teaching experience, applicants should have a PhD Degree in Accountancy or a relevant Professional Accounting Qualification.
