The Purpose of the Role 

The School of Dental Science at Trinity College wishes to recruit an Assistant Professor in Dental Education. The primary purpose of this post is to contribute to the teaching, research, and administrative activities in the School of Dental Science and at the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH). This role will have a particular emphasis on supporting curricular review and the development and implementation of a new five-year Dental Curriculum for Dental Science students, developing and implementing an evidence-based assessment programme across the undergraduate dental courses in line with the university policies and international best practice, and to meet the accreditation standards of the Dental Council of Ireland. 

The successful applicant will have an established reputation in teaching and research in the field of healthcare education and be expected to contribute to the ongoing review of the Dental Science curriculum particularly as it pertains to assessment and evaluation practices.

Appointees will be expected to divide their time between teaching, research, and supporting undergraduate dental education including curriculum review. Working with staff, such as the Directors of UG/PG Teaching & Learning, the postholder will play a critical role in the development of the new discipline of dental education practice and its impact on dental education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

The specific purpose of this employment is due to its primary emphasis on supporting the development and implementation of a new Dental Curriculum for Dental Science students. Employment is not offered on an indefinite duration basis as it is expected that curriculum reform and development will be complete within definite period of time.

 

Context 

The school, through its educational programmes, strives to be innovative, research-driven, interdisciplinary, and international. The successful post holder will support the Director of Undergraduate Teaching & Learning (DUTL), Director of Postgraduate Teaching & Learning (DPGTL) and Dean of Dental Affairs and work closely with the Dental Studies and Dental School teams, course and Year co-ordinators and module leads, and all offices allied to education to ensure the delivery, organisation, coordination, and assessment of the undergraduate and postgraduate dental programmes. 

The role is based in the School of Dental Science, Trinity College Dublin, situated in the Dublin Dental University Hospital, Lincoln Place on the main TCD campus, and affiliated sites. There will also be a requirement to collaborate with the schools and the main teaching hospitals allied to the TCD Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and collaborate in curriculum development and assessment development practices across the Schools in the Faculty e.g. interprofessional education (IPE).

 

Person Requirements 

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills, and attributes for successful performance in the role.

Qualifications (Essential) 

• A postgraduate qualification (PhD or equivalent) in medical or dental education or a relevant field from an accredited institution. Or a doctorate in education which has a focus on teaching and learning and curriculum design in higher education (preferably medical or dentistry education; to include PhD or EdD). 

• Minimum of 3 years (full-time or its equivalent) of relevant university level teaching experience.

This position is funded by clinical research studies and is available for 1 year initially, with the potential to extend subject to project success and further funding acquisition.

Since 2008, the HRB-CRFG has been involved in clinical research studies (including observational research, clinical trials and clinical investigations) across many clinical areas (including but not limited to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, stroke, cancer, gastroenterology, psychiatry, obstetrics, etc.). The HRB-CRFG is based in a purpose‐built, state of the art unit dedicated to the conduct of clinical research and undertakes research on behalf of a thriving research community both nationally and internationally. The Unit houses our research teams and research support personnel and has the capacity to conduct in‐person, on‐site visits with participants in research studies in a safe and regulatory compliant manner. In tandem, HRB-CRFG has developed and refined key skills to support our local researchers and international collaborators in the inception, design and execution of research projects, particularly in the area of clinical trials of novel interventions. We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to join the HPRC, which comprises of multidisciplinary team members working in Health Promotion. This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant research centre working across several research projects spanning different life stages and topics such as sexual health, mental health and well-being, child and adolescent health, health literacy, nutrition and more. The post-holder will be responsible for embedding and expanding knowledge translation, dissemination and impact activities for research projects in the centre. The post would suit researchers with an interest in knowledge translation and the application of knowledge to practice and policy.
