Research Fellow School of Engineering and Architecture, Sustainability Institute, Energy Policy and Modelling Group (EPMG)

Document
Candidate Brief_287.pdf3.89 MB
Vacancy Description

We are seeking an experienced Research Fellow in energy systems and climate-informed modelling to contribute primarily to the ClimEnergise project (Climate-Informed Energy Systems Planning to Support Ireland’s Net Zero Ambitions). This role will lead the development and integration of climate-aware approaches into national energy and power system models, addressing the challenges posed by increasing weather and climate variability in Ireland’s energy transition.

The energy sector is deeply influenced by weather and climate. As Ireland transitions to renewable technologies—inherently weather-dependent—the influence of climate and weather becomes increasingly critical. At the same time, climate change and the rising frequency of extreme weather events (such as prolonged low wind speeds, cold snaps, and heatwaves) present risks to energy security and system reliability. Integrating climate variability and extremes into long-term energy planning is therefore essential. This challenge is particularly pressing in Ireland, where limited interconnection capacity, high import dependence, and climate vulnerabilities further complicate the transition. In response, the ClimEnergise project is developing an integrated modelling framework that combines high-resolution climate data with energy system models to assess climate risks and identify cost-effective, operationally feasible mitigation strategies.

The successful candidate will mainly work at the intersection of climate science, energy systems analysis, and power systems planning. The candidate will develop a novel modelling framework that translates climate signals to support cost-optimal long-term investment decisions, while also considering operational feasibility. The successful candidate will also contribute to the CAPACITY project, applying tools such as the TIMES-Ireland Model to support robust decision-making on Ireland’s decarbonisation pathways.

Applicants must hold a PhD in engineering, climate science, energy systems, or a related field, along with substantial postdoctoral experience. Demonstrated expertise in whole energy system modelling or power systems analysis is a strong asset. Proficiency in translating meteorological data into energy variables is highly desirable.

Postdoctoral Researcher (TRACE Project) - Ryan Institute, University of Galway 011286

Document
011286 Job Description_1.pdf378.29 KB
Vacancy Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a Full time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with School of Natural Sciences and School of Engineering, and Ryan Institute at the University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is funded by PEACEPLUS PROGRAMME (Special EU Programmes Body) innovation challenge (www.seupb.eu/peaceplus) on the Technological Revolution towards a Agri-food Circular Economy (TRACE) project. The position is available from 1st September 2025 to contract end date of 30th June 2029.

The TRACE project aims to establish a cross-border innovation hub to transform the agri-food sector in Northern Ireland (NI) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI), with a focus on the Products of Animal Origin (POAO) supply chain. By applying advanced technologies, TRACE will improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen cross-border trade. The POAO trade is crucial to both economies—NI’s agri-food sector contributes £5bn annually and supports over 113,000 jobs. Yet, disruptions from Brexit, the pandemic, and new regulations have created bottlenecks and raised sustainability concerns. TRACE will deploy technologies like hyperspectral imaging, computer vision, IoT sensors, and blockchain to monitor food quality, safety and animal welfare in real-time and enhance transparency. AI and machine learning will analyse data from pilot sites to identify inefficiencies and opportunities. TRACE will strengthen innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness in the POAO sector, aligning with initiatives like the Shared Island Fund and City Deals, and equipping SMEs to meet future challenges.
