UCD Post-Doc Research Fellow Lvl 1, UCD Vet Med, 36 months

Vacancy Description

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Veterinary Medicine.

Successful treatment of diseases can often rely on restoring the normal structure and function of cells within tissues and organs. However, it is currently challenging to visualise detailed cellular changes within whole tissues in response to disease. Soft x-ray microscopy is a novel, exciting imaging technique which allows scientists to visualise cells in exquisite detail, but it has yet to be applied to imaging whole tissues. Project NanoX is a Europan Research Council Synergy project that will develop new techniques to image tissue microbiopsies, and will be applied to study the pathogenesis of hepatitis E virus (HEV), an important emerging zoonotic viral infection with no specific therapies or vaccines. This position is for an ambitious postdoctoral research scientist to join project NanoX, who will join an interdisciplinary team consisting of experts in virology, veterinary medicine, physics and biochemistry, and combine exciting research of high academic standard with the application of research findings in the development of new diagnostic techniques.

UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 Salary: €45,847 - €48,412 Per Annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 30th of June 2025.

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CVs submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.

The PD1 position is intended for early-stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.

Prior to application, further information (including application procedure) should be obtained from the Work at UCD website: https://www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs/

Post Summary

The resilience of the anti-viral immune system declines with age, yet there is significant heterogeneity in anti-viral immunity in older adults, resulting in diverse viral infection outcomes in this age group. Activation of type I interferon (IFN-I) responses are a fundamental component of innate anti-viral immunity, key for activation of early, direct anti-viral protection and later adaptive anti-viral immune responses, yet how, when and why these IFN-I responses decline with age is not well understood in human populations.

This project aims to explore the nuances of IFN-I response activation and regulation during ageing by investigating how these responses change with differential ageing states (e.g. frailty states, rates of biological ageing etc.). This project will use approaches such as scRNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq, DNAm analysis, proteomics and clinical data integration to determine how IFN-I responses change during ageing.

This project will be under the supervision of Prof Nollaig Bourke and Dr Matt McElheron and forms part of a larger, multi-disciplinary research programme with national and international academic and clinical collaborators.

A first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (2.1 or above) in a relevant discipline such as: genomic sciences, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, immunology, gerontology or a related biomedical or life science field.
