Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Architecture, Planning & Environmental Policy. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of a full-time, fixed term until the end of December 2025, Postdoctoral Researcher with Prof Elizabeth Shotton and Dr Daniel McCrum. This project is funded by the SFI-Defence Organisation Innovation Challenge call in collaboration with the Irish Department of Defence and Defence Forces. The Modular Adaptable SHelter (MASH) project will develop a lightweight, portable, and rapidly deployable shelter to meet the operational needs of the Irish Defence Forces and provide temporary emergency housing solutions, which protect against a range of weather conditions for a variety of operating environments. Building on existing shelter concepts, the solution will be developed through innovative design for manufacture and assembly, modern methods of construction, and design for disassembly (DfD) construction techniques. MASH will significantly impact on defence forces mobility and responsiveness, as well as providing safe, comfortable and durable temporary accommodation. PD1 Salary: €45,847 - €52,339 Per Annum Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 3rd of July 2025. We are seeking a Senior Executive Assistant to provide marketing and recruitment support for micro-credential courses. The successful candidate will make a crucial contribution to the success of the University’s Micro-credentials project by ensuring that courses are widely promoted through digital and print channels, including social media, and that prospective students have access to clear information on their options.

 

Reporting to the Micro-credentials Project Lead, the Senior Executive Assistant will work closely with academic staff and colleagues to understand the University’s Micro-credentials offering, identity innovative strategies to promote them to the intended audience and implement these strategies to budget and in line with University strategy. 

 

The Irish Universities Association (IUA) is the representative body of the university sector and has secured funding for the project to develop a Multi-Campus Micro-Credentials system in Irish Universities, providing a coherent national framework for quality assured and accredited micro-credentials. This full-time contract position is funded by this project.

 

The MicroCreds project is funded through the Higher Education Authority’s Human Capital Initiative, aimed at establishing a system of quality assured and accredited micro-credentials across the seven IUA universities. MicroCreds provides up/re-skilling opportunities to those in employment and those seeking to enhance their employability, and aims to drive lifelong learning in Ireland, in close collaboration with enterprise. The MicroCreds project develops a collective national framework for micro-credentials across the universities; builds engagement with enterprise for the development and roll-out of the micro-credentials programmes; and develops a co-ordinated ‘shop window’ portal to drive awareness of micro-credentials.

Overview of the department 

The Health and Safety Office provides advice, assistance and support on all aspects of occupational health & safety to DCU Management, Staff and Students and in doing so maintains the University in good standing in relation to Health & Safety legislative obligations and national and international best practice.

Role Profile

Working as part of a four-person team, the Health and Safety Advisor will report to the Health and Safety Manager. The post holder will be responsible for supporting the University in developing and expanding existing safety systems and processes to ensure they are appropriate to a multi-campus environment. In particular, they will work closely with management and staff on all campuses and with DCU campus companies to assist them in the review, development or adaptation of safety policies and systems to integrate seamlessly into DCU safety management systems.  Possessing excellent communication and risk assessment skills, the Health and Safety Advisor promote and further develop safety awareness amongst DCU staff and students. 

The post holder will initially be primarily located on the DCU Glasnevin campus but in the course of the role will be required to operate across all DCU campuses.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following: 

  • Advise, develop and maintain/support strong links with DCU Heads of Schools and Units and Campus Company CEOs with safety related tasks.
  • Provide staff with technical support and advice on occupational safety, occupational hygiene, workplace ergonomics and other work related issues.
  • Participate in regular reviews of DCU's health and safety management system and policies to support continual improvement in DCU’s safety performance and ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical support to Schools, Units and Campus Companies in the compilation of local safety statements and the regular review of risk assessments, advising on appropriate control measures.
  • As part of the DCU Health and Safety Function, continually review and identify staff training needs, design training plans and courses, deliver tailored staff training programmes and mentor student leaders in delivering safe events. Maintain records of all safety training.
  • Investigate and report on significant injuries/incidents as required and implement effective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Liaise with the DCU Estates Office in relation to all building fabric/services safety issues and contractor safety performance.
  • Provide input into Health and Safety Office reports to senior management.
  • Generate health and safety metrics as a tool to measure the implementation of the DCU health and safety management system.
  • Develop user-friendly online training and reporting systems that encourage high levels of staff engagement in safety.
  • Keep up to date with all aspects of relevant health, safety and welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes.
  • Compliance with all statutory requirements and best practice
  • Ensuring a positive health & safety culture across the university 
  • Any other appropriate duties that may be assigned from time to time.

 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Relevant 3rd level qualification- A Primary Degree and / or Masters in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Membership of a recognised professional safety and health organisation such as IOSH.
  • At least 5 years relevant experience of working within Occupational Health and Safety environment (ideally within the higher education sector) at a mid level management grade.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a team.
  • Professional approach, coupled with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, presentation and training skills, and ability to adapt /adjust communication skills to relevant audience ability (e.g. students/laboratories etc).
  • Strong IT skills (web editing desirable).
  • Flexible and self-motivated.
  • Must be familiar with current health and safety legislation, and demonstrate the ability to interpret legislation in the context of the higher education sector.
  • Proven ability of auditing health and safety audits.

Salary Scale:

Professional 5A - €58,798 - €79,513 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale. 

Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy

Remote Working Policy

From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
