The School of Language, Literacy, and Early Childhood Education
The School of Language, Literacy, and Early Childhood Education is one of six schools within the DCU Institute of Education. The school contributes to a wide range of education-related degrees and courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It brings together a large dynamic faculty with a significant range of expertise in theory, practice, research, and policy in the fields of language, literacy, and early childhood education. Staff are committed to ongoing scholarship and inquiry in reciprocal partnership with early childhood education and care settings, schools, colleagues across the institute, and other stakeholders in the education system in Ireland and beyond.
Role Profile
The School of Language, Literacy, and Early Childhood Education is seeking to recruit an Assistant Professor to work collaboratively as a Teagasc na Gaeilge team member. The appointee will contribute across our initial teacher education undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through research-led teaching, student mentoring and support, professional placement and supervision of student projects and research. This post has a particular focus on supporting initial teacher education for primary education.
The post is based on the St Patrick’s Campus and the candidate will report to the Head of School.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Teaching and Learning
The successful candidate will be required to contribute significantly to the development, teaching, assessment, and administration across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, to include:
- Module design, development, and delivery
- Support and evaluate students on school placement visits and writing reports
- Contribute to the design, development, and management of future programmes and other developments in the field of Teagasc na Gaeilge
- Work closely with colleagues in the School and Faculty to promote the integration of Irish across programmes
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate theses
- Visit students on Gaeltacht placements
- Contribute to tutorials and the wider teaching of the Institute as required by the Head of School.
Research and Scholarship
The successful candidate will be committed to high-quality research and publication on an individual and collaborative basis in the fields of Teagasc na Gaeilge. The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Be research-active in their field and the general field of teacher education
- Develop and support research initiatives within the School of Language, Literacy and Early Childhood Education; in SEALBHÚ: DCU Research Centre for the Learning and Teaching of Irish; and the wider faculty
- Contribute to the scholarship and intellectual life of the University, contributing to the development of the DCU Institute of Education’s research agenda
Service and Contribution to the University and Society
Activities will be defined by the Head of School and may include:
- Participating in school and university meetings
- Engaging in meetings related to programmes
- Representing the School in marketing and recruitment of students
- Being active in the organisation of seminars and conferences and developing relationships with stakeholders across the University and in the education sector more generally
The successful candidate will also undertake administrative functions related to the activities of the School of Language, Literacy, and Early Childhood Education.
Qualifications and Experience
This position is open to candidates who meet the following criteria:
- A post-graduate qualification, preferably at doctoral level, in areas related to Teagasc na Gaeilge
- A minimum of three years relevant teaching experience at primary/post-primary level
- A strong background in language learning, curriculum, and pedagogy in relation to Teagasc na Gaeilge
- Evidence of research activity in Teagasc na Gaeilge or related area
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in Irish
- Experience in teacher education is highly desirable
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Excellent administrative and organisation skills
- Capacity to integrate digital technology into the teaching of Teagasc na Gaeilge
Essential Training
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale:
Assistant Professor Above Bar: €63,311 - €101,461
*Candidates must have a Doctorate to be considered for above bar scale.
Assistant Professor Below Bar: €47,960 - € 65,247
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy

Remote Working Policy
From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
