011133 Job Description (1).pdf972.95 KB
Vacancy Description

The University of Galway invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) permanent Lecturer position in Performance Practices. This role encompasses undergraduate teaching in Performance and Screen Studies—a shared subject between the disciplines of Drama and Theatre Studies and Film and Digital Media—as well as postgraduate teaching across both areas. The successful candidate will also contribute to the management of the undergraduate BA subject offering and actively contribute to the research environment of the School of English, Media and Creative Arts, the Institute of Creativity, and the broader university community.

Launched in 2022, Performance and Screen Studies (GY101) brings together two globally recognised disciplines—Drama and Theatre Studies and Film and Digital Media – both ranked among the Top 100 in the QS World University Rankings for Performing Arts. This interdisciplinary subject offers students a dynamic curriculum encompassing drama, film, television, artificial intelligence, practice-based research, social media, gaming, streaming platforms, political activism, and more. This course has recently undergone further curricular development to ensure its alignment with Teaching Council requirements for the new Leaving Certificate subject entitled Drama, Film, and Theatre Studies.

Drama and Theatre Studies, established at the University of Galway in 2014, offers a four-year undergraduate BA in Drama, Theatre and Performance that integrates both practical and theoretical approaches. The discipline also delivers MA programmes and a structured PhD, while contributing to teaching across English, Music, and other related subjects. It is housed in the O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance, centrally located on the Galway campus. The university is home to one of the world’s most significant archival collections in Irish theatre and maintains formal partnerships with major cultural institutions, including Druid Theatre, the Abbey Theatre, and the Galway International Arts Festival.

Film and Digital Media was established at the University of Galway in 2003 within the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, and offers several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This is a research-led discipline that explores the theory, history, and practice of audiovisual media and, more recently, creative technologies. It offers a denominated BA Film & Digital Media, as well as a suite of postgraduate programmes—including taught MAs and a structured PhD—with expertise across areas such as film history, critical screen theory, short-form filmmaking, screenwriting and public advocacy.  The discipline has strong industry and festival links and played a central role in Galway’s designation as a UNESCO City of Film.

The ideal candidate will have university-level teaching experience, or demonstrable ability to deliver excellent university-level teaching, in at least two of the following core areas: performance studies, screen studies, acting, stage and screen design, playwriting, directing/devising, practice-based research, or short-form filmmaking. Given the post’s alignment with the Institute for Creativity, relevant experience/research in creative practice or creative technologies will be considered an advantage.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and demonstrate a capacity for independent administrative work, as well as a strong commitment to research, teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr. Ian Walsh (ian.walsh@universityofgalway.ie and +353 (0)91 493233).
