    The Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation (CGR) was established in University College Cork (UCC) as a research unit within the Department of Medicine at UCC in September 2010. In addition to research-led clinical project activity, the centre supports interdisciplinary teaching and learning in Gerontology, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care through its Postgraduate Programmes in Older Person Rehabilitation and Dementia.

    Our core mission is to promote healthy ageing and to raise the standard of healthcare for older people. Ongoing research is focused on dementia and delirium, Parkinson’s Disease, rehabilitation, advance care planning and palliative care in neurodegeneration, with a strong focus on research that is user-focussed and informs policy and quality improvement in the Health Service. CGR staff and researchers are from a broad range of disciplines and CGR has strong links to many other departments in the School of Medicine, and to other schools in the College of Medicine and Health, particularly Nursing and Clinical Therapies.

    The Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation | University College Cork is currently recruiting a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher or Post-Doctoral Researcher to work on the In-Touch Horizon Europe funded project. This position can be filled at either Senior Post-Doctoral / Post-Doctoral Researcher level, depending on qualification and experience of the successful candidate and to be appointed at the more appropriate grade based on experience.

    We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join an international study evaluating the In-Touch intervention. In-Touch is a person-centred palliative care programme for people with advanced dementia in nursing homes. This ambitious 5-year project is being led by UCC, and the project involves a pan-European cluster randomised controlled trial in 56 nursing homes across 7 European countries. The successful applicant will work within in the Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation, under the direction of the Principal Investigator, Professor Suzanne Timmons.

    The successful candidate will contribute to trial design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings. Responsibilities include coordinating multi-site data collection in Ireland, conducting qualitative and quantitative research, and preparing publications and presentations of findings. Experience in clinical trials, dementia care, palliative care, or health services research is desirable. The second phase involves piloting the intervention over 12 weeks, recruiting patients, monitoring outcomes, and assessing implementation and service effectiveness.

    JOB SYNOPSIS:
    This is an exciting opportunity to join the dynamic research team of the National Kidney Disease Surveillance System and Quality Assurance programme. We are seeking an ambitious and motivated Post Doctoral Researcher to support key projects through data science and statistical analyses to get a better understanding of kidney disease and its overlap with other chronic conditions, including the benefits of innovative treatment strategies. Working closely with the PI, the core research team, and stakeholders, the researcher will support a range of activities related to the: 

    • Development and validation of risk models for kidney disease and complications. 
    • Machine learning and artificial intelligence in disease modelling and classification. 
    • Generation of scientific reports.
    • The successful candidate will work with several large datasets to better understand kidney disease and its prevention. 

    Working directly with the PI and senior members of the research team, the duties of the post include a) development of a minimum dataset, b) performance of data analysis with generation of estimates of disease incidence, prevalence and mortality, c) development of prediction models, d) determination of mortality rates and patterns of mortality.

    The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team that address the epidemiology of kidney disease in Ireland.

This broad alliance will focus on identifying, advising, and guiding academic projects towards commercial success. Additionally, the ARC Hub will focus on developing the translational research skills of academics and postdoctoral researchers.     Senior Technical Officer in Seismology

    Senior Technical Officer in Seismology

    The Geophysics Section of the School of Cosmic Physics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS) invites applications for a Senior Technical Officer to lead the technical aspects of its work in both marine and terrestrial seismology. The Geophysics Section owns, operates and maintains: a diverse pool of terrestrial seismometers & geophones; ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs); hydrophones & absolute pressure sensors; Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) interrogators.

    Working within a larger team, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring maintenance, calibration and operation readiness of the sensing pool, with a particular focus on the ocean sensing and DAS equipment. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in the delivery of field experiments and end user training and may, infrequently, be required to spend significant periods of time at sea. Occasional support for colleagues at the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) is also envisaged. The job will require field work in physically challenging terrestrial environments (e.g. on volcanoes), across the world. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake robust data QC and archive data under FAIR principles.

    Extensive previous experience with real-time seismic network operations, terrestrial seismometers, OBS, DAS, ocean hydrophones, failure troubleshooting, seismic networks data processing, data QC and data archiving, are all essential. The ideal candidate will have proven experience working in remote, physically demanding settings, with the ability to independently solve problems as they arise.

    Essential:

    • Significant previous experience working in a technical capacity
    • Extensive experience in installing seismometers, including off-grid 12VDC power

    Systems and associated data processing, QC and archiving

    • Demonstrated experience in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting OBS and hydrophones
    • Willingness to travel for extended field work, also at sea
    • Full drivers licence
    • Strong programming skills related to data processing and handling
    • Field experience in configuring and operating DAS interrogators
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently in challenging environments, and as part of a team 

    Desirable

    • Experience in running large scale equipment tenders
    • Technical report writing 

    Salary:    €61,203 rising by five annual increment points to €73,670 (PPC scale for new entrants to the public service and existing public servants who pay a personal pension contribution). A lower scale will apply where the appointee is an existing civil/public servant who does not pay a personal pension contribution.

    Minimum Qualification:  Masters degree in geophysics, physics or a related subject.

    We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the project “AquaUP - Aquafeed Upgraded: Enhancing Immune Function with Seaweed-modified Functional Compounds”, which is funded by the Marine Institute, Ireland and The EU under the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership programme. We seek to appoint a postdoctoral researcher for an anticipated 17-month period, with the objective to support the Primary Investigator and the co-applicants in conducting Techno-economic assessment (TEA) to determine the economic viability, and bottlenecks, of a multiproduct biorefinery approach of producing seaweed bioactive at a commercial scale.

    The focus of the postdoctoral researcher’s work will be predominantly (but not exclusively) on Work Package 6, which includes analysing the economic feasibility of the proposed processes (WP1-5) using the Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA). Outcomes will be assessed through a sensitivity analysis as well as a risk analysis (which will identify different favourable and non-favourable scenarios such as price variations in the market) to determine potential hot spots in the process which affect the feasibility of the technology and to determine if it is better to commercialize the process as a whole or in modules. The TEA will also provide the necessary information to compare the proposed process with current solutions from an economic perspective. The candidate will be part of the project’s multi country, multi university consortium and will have the opportunities to co-lead the development of deliverables and present project findings at international conferences.     JOB SYNOPSIS:
    The Teaching Assistant in Audio/Video Production will assist in the planning, organisation and supervision of undergraduate modules in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS). This includes delivering tutorials and labs, providing feedback to learners, assisting with seminars and other activities, and otherwise enhancing the learning environment.

    "A Teaching Assistant post in the University of Limerick operates as a training contract. The duration of the contract is limited to 10 months. However, it may be renewed for one further period only not exceeding 10 months.
