The Purpose of the Role 

The Research Ireland ARC Hub for Therapeutics, hosted by the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, is seeking to appoint a Senior Portfolio Manager (Chief Scientific Officer, Entrepreneur in Residence), who will report directly to the ARC Executive Director. This role will support the mission, vision, culture and strategic objectives of the ARC Hub to ‘accelerate academic research towards commercial success and to cultivate the next generation of innovation and entrepreneurial leaders’. 

The successful candidate will provide leadership, strategic directions and guidance for two reporting portfolio managers, be responsible for the selection of projects with commercial potential from academic groups in Higher Education Institutions (HEI) nationally, and will direct and manage their execution towards a successful commercial endpoint in the form of university spin-outs, patents and licenses to industry. Interaction of the ARC Hub with multiple stakeholders will be pivotal to ensuring successful commercialisation of academic research, requiring the Senior Portfolio Manager to forge a range of academic and non-academic relationships. 

The successful candidate must assume a high level of leadership and responsibility with respect to ownership and delivery for the commercial strategy of the project portfolio, promoting cohesion within the team and with external parties, setting shared goals and in defining targets for monitoring of performance. They will provide significant input into the the higher strategy and tactical planning of the ARC Hub through regular interactions with the ARC Executive Director (based in UCD), Senior Management team, and Advisory and Executive committees. The Senior Portfolio Manager will be the most senior appointment for the ARC Hub in Trinity and will be required to deputise when required for the ARC Hub Academic Director Prof Vincent Kelly.

Context 

The Research Ireland ARC Hub for Therapeutics is a collaborative initiative between Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, with the aim of guiding academic projects to commercial success on a national scale in conjunction with other Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the Republic of Ireland. The ARC Hub is focused on the generation of high-quality spin-outs and licenses in the fields of small molecule therapies, biological therapies, biomaterials, biomarkers with therapeutic potential and in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). To achieve this objective, the ARC Hub will unite various elements of the Irish biopharma landscape, including venture capitalists, indigenous companies, state agencies, and a network of advisors. This broad alliance will focus on identifying, advising, and guiding academic projects towards commercial success. Additionally, the ARC Hub will focus on developing the translational research skills of academics and postdoctoral researchers. This will involve entrepreneurial training, engagement with external experts, and hands-on experience in taking research to market, thereby nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurial scientists and fostering a robust and sustainable innovation ecosystem in Ireland.

Qualifications 

• The successful candidate must have a third level PhD qualification in science/engineering or equivalent, with relevant experience in therapeutic/pharmaceutical drug discovery and development in industry (5-10 years). 

• Experience and additional graduate or post-graduate qualifications in project management would be an advantage.

The INFINITY project aims to advance wave energy in Europe by developing a more efficient, reliable Power Take Off (PTO) system and control technology. Building on past projects, it focuses on designing durable systems, using advanced controls to adapt to wear and tear, and supporting a circular supply chain. With Operations & Maintenance (O&M) making up 30% of costs, INFINITY emphasizes reliability and predictive maintenance to extend service intervals from 2 to 5 years and cut costs by 50%. These innovations aim to overcome barriers to wave energy adoption, making it more practical, cost-effective, and a viable renewable energy source.

The project team is composed of leading academic and industry collaborators from: RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Ocean Harvesting Technologies, Politecnico di Torino, The Technical University Denmark etc.

This project is funded through the EU’s Clean Energy Transition Partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, and the successful candidate will join a dynamic group of around 30 postdoctoral, PhD and other researchers in COER, who work on the development of wave energy technology, with projects funded from various national and international sources. We are seeking applications for a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher, on the topics of DNA computing, DNA data storage and DNA nanostructures in the research group (https://dna.hamilton.ie/ ) of Professor Damien Woods at the Hamilton Institute, with a possible co-appointment in the Department of Computer Science.

EU and Irish national funding is provided by the DISCO project funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge programme (https://disco-tech.eu/), and the Active tiles project funded by Science Foundation Ireland Frontiers of the Future Programme (SFI FFP). 

The role involves engineering DNA-based self-assembly systems, DNA/molecular computers and DNA data-storage systems in the wet-lab. Specifically, topics include: 

1. Designing and implementing DNA nanostructures for DNA computing and DNA storage, for the EIC DISCO project (DNA based Infrastructure for Storage and Computation). 
2. Control of nucleation for DNA tile-based self-assembly (SFI FFP project: Active DNA tiles for programmable nucleation of robust DNA). 

Both topics involve designing DNA nanostructures, including DNA origami, DNA tile-based systems and DNA computers of any/every kind including new, imaginative, designs. 

Ideal candidates will have familiarity with such systems. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to carefully design and execute wet-lab experiments. Another potential direction is on theory; mathematically and computationally analysing the computational power of molecular computers. The successful candidate will develop their research skills, publish high-quality work, receive training and mentorship in grant funding applications, supervise students and advance their academic career. We seek creative individuals willing to take initiative on research directions in an exciting and foundational research topic and who wish to define the future of the field.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate for Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher should have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) and a background in experimental practice of DNA-based molecular computing, and/or in theoretical computer science. Candidates with a theoretical background and experience are welcome but should demonstrate a keen interest and/or understanding of chemical, biochemical, physical theory relevant for thinking about molecular processes such as self-assembly, molecular robotics and/or chemical reaction networks. Also, candidates with a background in bioengineering, synthetic biology, molecular self-assembly, physics, chemistry and other related fields will be considered, but should have an interest in applying ideas from algorithms and computer programming to the molecular setting. The ideal candidate should have a history of outstanding research publications commensurate with career stage, which will be used as criteria to assess suitability. In addition, candidates applying should have relevant post-PhD experience suited to the role, specifically at least two years of post-doctoral research experience of relevance to the project (typically academia, but research-focused industry experience too providing there is appropriate justification).

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The Rehabilitation Engineering and Robotics laboratory at UCD, led by Dr. Donal Holland and Dr. Giacomo Severini, is carrying on a research project (the ReHAPT project) that aims at developing a novel robot-based lower limb training strategy for rehabilitation of stroke survivors. The rehabilitation strategy is based on the use of predictive neuromechanical modeling for designing the assistance/resistance force patterns deployed by a robotic prototype for lower limb training previously developed in the lab. The prototype is called the HaCT system and is based on a stationary pedaling system design. There are two main scientific components in the ReHAPT project, the modeling component and the robotic component. This position is a Post Doctoral role in the robotic component of the project. The aim is to develop the low-and high-level control strategies for the HaCT robot, which consists of 3 motors shaping the kinematic and kinetic trajectories of the lower limb. This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching. Post Doc Level 1 Salary Range: €42,783 - €46,569 per annum. Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
