Overview of the Department
The School of Computing at Dublin City University has earned a strong reputation for excellence in research and teaching. In addition to its existing programmes the B.Sc. in Computer Science degree, the B.Sc. in Computing for Business and the B.Sc in Data Science, we also offer a range of innovative taught postgraduate programmes aimed at producing graduates with the professional and personal skills most sought after in the Information Economy.
The School of Computing also enjoys a lively, supportive environment for research in many areas of computing, with its numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. research students producing work of significance at both national and international level. With close industry links and fee support for EU students, the School's teaching and research programmes reflect the current and anticipated needs of Ireland's industrial and commercial sectors, while at the same time meeting the most rigorous national and international academic standards.
Role Profile
The School of Computing is now seeking to appoint a Professor of Computing. Appointment at Professor level is possible for exceptionally qualified and experienced candidates. This position presents an exciting opportunity for a motivated person to make a significant contribution to the future of the School of Computing at DCU. The successful candidate will be an internationally recognised academic committed to the pursuit of pioneering software engineering research, with evidence of leadership as Principal Investigator on substantial successful funding awards, and corresponding executive directorship of the delivery of such programmes.
The successful candidate will have an excellent proven track record of leadership, strategic innovation and effective operational management in the university sector and beyond, for example on initiatives related to internationalisation, academic programme (re)design, research commercialisation, as well as demonstrable support for broader Faculty/University initiatives.
Reporting to the Head of School of Computing, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching, curriculum development, research and administrate activities in the School of Computing across all levels.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Teaching and Learning
To contribute to/direct teaching and learning activity in the School of Computing by:
- Designing and delivering modules in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards, which integrate world-leading research outputs.
- Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies to equip students with skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners; innovations in assessment deemed especially important in the current, rapidly changing software engineering domain.
- Leading the organisation of programmes and modules that align with the School’s strategy.
Research and Scholarship
To steer and contribute to research activity in the School by:
- Engaging in innovative and impactful research, financing such research at scale, and consistently publishing as a lead / senior author in top tier journals and international conferences.
- Extending DCU’s internationally recognised expertise in key emerging aspects of software engineering and artificial intelligence, also adopting an important role in the further enrichment of the School’s national and international reputation.
- Participating in research-related activities such as research student supervision, PhD thesis examination, editorial commissions, and mentorship to junior colleagues.
- Fulfilling key strategic roles, e.g. General Chair or Strategic Chair, for major international conferences in the software engineering space, and demonstrating a commitment to leading the development of high-quality standards.
- Demonstrating industrial and societal impact of their research through IP creation, e.g. patenting, and associated IP commercialisation.
Service and Contribution to the University and Society
To contribute to the management and administration of the School of Computing and Faculty by:
- Delivering senior management, leadership and service roles to a high standard.
- Contributing proactively to relevant school and university committees, working groups and meetings.
- Engaging in, and contributing proactively to, staff development activities, Internationalisation efforts, and external School and Faculty Quality Reviews.
Leadership
Consistent with the level of seniority, the successful candidate will be required to:
- Foster a culture of teaching innovation within the discipline and School.
- Contribute to the leadership and management of the School of Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Computing, and the wider University.
- Provide teaching and mentorship to early career academics.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent (NFQ Level 10) in Computer Science or a closely related field from an accredited institution, along with evidence of excellent research in the general software engineering domain.
- Depth and breadth of teaching experience in higher education and a proven track record of excellence in teaching and of inspiring students, as evidence through innovative teaching with associated evidential outputs, for example peer-reviewed publications.
- Excellent research track record, including consistent publication as lead/senior author in leading international peer-reviewed journals/conferences, engagement in supervision of research students, attracting research funding at scale as Principal Investigator.
- Ability to strongly demonstrate an alignment of their research interests with existing Platform, Distinctive and/or Emerging research expertise within the School of Computing. Evidence of highly impactful industrial/societal engagement leading to successful Intellectual Property Licence Agreements and robust Intellectual Property Management, including for example, granted international patents.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills consistent with evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach in an academic environment.
- Clear leadership attributes and skills that will contribute to the development and execution of the School’s strategy and the enrichment of the School’s national and international reputation, particularly in key emerging aspects of software engineering and artificial intelligence, along with an excellent demonstrable track record of participating/leading key strategic School/Faculty/University programmes and projects.
- Evidence of such activity could include membership of (and contributions to) international standards technical committees, general chairpersonship for international conferences, editorial contributions for leading international conferences/journals, or equivalent contributions.
Desirable
- Experience in senior service and administration roles (such as, Head of School, Dean, or equivalent) would be advantageous.
Essential Training
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale:
Professor - €103,481 - €138,313 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale.
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Remote Working Policy
From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
