School of Computing
The School of Computing at Dublin City University has earned a strong reputation for excellence in research and teaching. In addition to its existing programmes the B.Sc. in Computer Science degree, the B.Sc. in Computing for Business and the B.Sc. in Data Science, we also offer a range of innovative taught postgraduate programmes aimed at producing graduates with the professional and personal skills most sought after in the Information Economy.
The School of Computing also enjoys a lively, supportive environment for research in many areas of computing, with its numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. research students producing work of significance at both national and international level. With close industry links and fee support for EU students, the School's teaching and research programmes reflect the current and anticipated needs of Ireland's industrial and commercial sectors, while at the same time meeting the most rigorous national and international academic standards.
Role Profile
The School of Computing is now seeking to appoint a Full Professor of Computing on a permanent basis. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to make a significant contribution to the future of the School of Computing at DCU. The successful candidate will be an internationally recognised academic committed to the pursuit of pioneering software engineering and computing related research, who will actively contribute to the strategic direction of the core computing research initiatives in the School of Computing and DCU.
Reporting to the Head of School of Computing, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching, curriculum development, research and administrate activities in the School of Computing across all levels.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Teaching and Learning
To lead teaching and learning activity in the school by:
- Coordinating and delivering teaching in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards
- Using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies to foster a deep approach to learning and which equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong learners
- Designing and developing new and internationally recognised undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
- Enriching the scholarship of teaching within the school
- Fostering a culture of teaching innovation and positive learning environment within the School
- Supervising postgraduate research students and contributing to the School’s PhD supervisory process
Research and Scholarship
To steer and contribute to research activity in the school by:
- Engaging in innovative and impactful research, and consistently publishing as a lead / senior author in top tier journals and international conferences
- Participate in research-related activities such as research student supervision, PhD thesis examination and related duties
- Securing funds from external agencies and organisations to support personal and school research initiatives
- Providing mentorship to early and mid-career stage researchers and academics
- Providing direction to the wider research community by hosting international events and conferences
- Enhancing the reputation and influence of the School in the international research community through conference presentations, journal editorship, external examining, etc.
- Developing and leveraging international research networks to enrich the research activity of the school
- Contributing to the hard/soft skill enhancement of our research students and staff
- Demonstrating the industrial and societal impact of their research through IP and spin out companies
Service and Contribution to the University and Society
To contribute to the management and administration of the School by:
- Influencing the School’s strategic planning and direction and working collaboratively in delivering on the School’s strategic goals
- Delivering management and service roles at School, Faculty and University level to a high standard
- Participating proactively in relevant School, Faculty and University committees, working groups and meetings
- Engaging in, and contributing to, staff development activities
- Contributing to the development and performance of colleagues through coaching, mentorship and peer support
- Enhancing the reputation of the School through engagement in, and leadership of, external academic, business (including consultancy), professional, public sector and community and out-reach activities (approved by the Executive Dean, where appropriate)
- Play an active role in the leadership of the University/Faculty/School by taking on roles such as Dean, Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Associate Dean for Research or Head of School.
Leadership
To contribute to the leadership of the School by:
- Fostering a culture of teaching innovation within the discipline and School.
- Contributing to the leadership of collaborative and interdisciplinary research within the discipline, School and wider University.
- Providing teaching and research mentorship to early and mid-career academics.
- Leadership of, and/or participation in, programme/discipline and School accreditation activities.
- Leading and participating in School marketing, alumni and stakeholder relationship activities, for example, programme promotion events, INTRA (work placement) visits, events with partner universities etc.
Qualifications and Experience
- Applicants must hold a PhD in Computer Science or related area.
- Both depth and breadth of teaching experience in higher education.
- Exceptional subject matter expertise in any one of the following areas: software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence or education technology, with the expectation of further enhancing DCU’s international recognised expertise in these areas.
- Proven outstanding track record in teaching with evidence of inspiring students, through innovative teaching with associated evidential outputs, for example peer-reviewed publications.
- Evidence of leading multi-party consortia to significant funding awards at national and/or international levels.
- Proven exceptional track record of high-quality research outputs, including consistent publication as lead/senior author in leading international peer-reviewed journals/conferences, engagement in supervision of research students and attracting research funding at scale as Principal Investigator.
- A current pipeline of research projects expected to align with existing Platform, Distinctive and/or Emerging research expertise within the School of Computing and lead to publications in high-impact international journals.
- Evidence of a strong and sustained track record of impactful industrial engagement leading to successful Intellectual Property Licence Agreements and robust Intellectual Property Management.
- Clear and demonstrable leadership attributes and skills that will contribute to the further enrichment of the School’s strategy and national and international reputation.
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to inspire and motivate colleagues, with regard to all areas of activity within the DCU School of Computing.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills consistent with evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
- Transformational track record of participating/leading key strategic School/Faculty/University programmes and projects.

Salary Scale:
Full Professor - €144,297 - €182,406 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale.
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Remote Working Policy
From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.
