The team and their collaborators assessed the potential of digital interventions to address these. SUMIT’S engagement work has identified four key shared local service issues;

SUMIT is a test of change, which will inform health and care transformation, and wider policy and strategic considerations for future digitally enabled health and social care services.

The team at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) will lead the research and evaluation of the SUMIT project under the direction of Professor Catherine Comiskey, Principal Investigator. Postdoctoral Researcher -Epigenetic regulation of Nematostella development- School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (1 FTE) 011156

Vacancy Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time- fixed-term position as a postdoctoral researcher with the lab of Dr. James Gahan at the University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is funded by Research Ireland and is available from 01/10/25 for a period of 2 years with the possibility of renewal.

In the Gahan lab we use the sea anemone Nematostella to investigate chromatin function during development and differentiation. Nematostella is part of the phylum cnidaria, the sister group to the majority of animals and thus in a pivotal phylogenetic position for understanding early animal evolution.

We work to dissect chromatin regulation during development and cell differentiation, using the nervous system as a model. In doing so we aim to understand how the processes underlying developmental gene regulation in more “complex” animals first evolved while simultaneously addressing more general questions about the role of chromatin in development and differentiation. The specific project will involve deploying epigenomic profiling tools to understand the role of chromatin and epigenetics during Nematostella vectensis development.

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €45,846 - €58,481 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

PhD Studentship in Use of AI and Machine Learning to Accelerate Formulation and Delivery of Medicines

Vacancy Description

Position Summary

Researchers from the School of Pharmacy are seeking qualified candidates to pursue a 36-month fully funded PhD Studentship in University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. Successful candidates will be part of a highly motivated team that will use modern computational methods to develop critical medicines for improving global health and equality.

For low-income populations in developing countries access to life-saving medicines is often fraught with obstacles. These include a lack of financial incentive for major pharmaceutical companies to develop such medicines, as well as lack of technical expertise and resources of local manufacturers to navigate the rigorous process of bringing these drugs to market.

To address this issue a team from the School of Pharmacy, UCC, led by the Professor of Pharmaceutics, Brendan Griffin is aiming to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools that can accelerate the creation of medicines for conditions that disproportionately affect those in developing countries, such as malaria and other tropical diseases. These tools will be made freely accessible via an open-source, web-based platform, ensuring that this technology can be leveraged worldwide. This ambitious project aligns to the UCC Futures thematic areas of Future Medicines and AI & Data Analytics. Successful candidates will gain experience developing computational tools to support a rational and science-based approach to selecting formulations for critical medicines in developing countries.

Key tasks in the PhD Studentship include:

  • Investigation of stability requirements and chemical space of critical drug molecules which address global health inequalities.
  • Develop computational tools with highest applicability for drug molecules which address global health inequalities.
  • Complete in vitro small-scale screening experiments to inform and validate the utility of the computational models.
  • Complete PhD credits as per structured PhD program requirements as set out by University College Cork.

Start Date (Planned): Negotiable

Salary/Stipend: €25,000 (plus fees).
