Executive Officer (Facilities)

The Purpose of the Role 

The Executive Officer (Facilities) is a specific purpose role is to support the transitional opening of the new Martin Naughton E3 Learning Foundry.. This new state-of-the-art 7,256 m2 facility, located in the East End of Trinity’s main campus comprises teaching facilities, project spaces and interactive learning laboratories for undergraduate students. In particular, the building will be the primary location for students enrolled in programmes offered by the E3 schools of Computer Science and Statistics, Engineering and Natural Sciences. Its purpose is to provide a multidisciplinary environment that facilitates an expansion of the learning opportunities and skills-set of students graduating within STEM disciplines. 

The Executive Officer (Facilities) will report to the Operations Manager (Facilities) and be part of the E3 Learning Foundry Facilities Team charged with co-ordinating the fit-out and operation of the building. 

Administrative responsibilities will include assisting with 

• the organisation and minuting of meetings that support the operational needs across the range of E3LF activities, 

• the procurement of office supplies, furniture and equipment, 

• the organisation of facility events such as the those related to its opening, 

• logging issues and contacting support teams e.g. for users of the IT and AV equipment in classrooms, laboratories, project spaces and ideation spaces.

 

Context 

Trinity College Dublin is providing an inspirational, transformative and collaborative new space for students, researchers and faculty within the new Martin Naughton E3 Learning Foundry. Construction of this 7,256 m2 facility commenced in 2021 and is expected to complete in April 2025. The Learning Foundry building is designed to be a vibrant hub for STEM subjects in the Schools of Computer Science and Statistics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences and to foster and encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, through its programmatic, physical, and technological innovation. The building will offer a distinctive, high-quality environment for E3 students and staff involved in the delivery of its programmes. 

The post-holder will report to the Operations Manager (Facilities) and work collaboratively with the other team members to ensure the delivery of high quality services to staff and students. 

The E3 schools currently offer programmes on a full-time and part-time (evenings and weekends) schedule. The post-holder will be expected to work flexibly and outside normal office hours when the need arises.

There may be some opportunity to work remotely but this is expected to be minimal. This role is customer facing.

The appointment is subject to qualifications and experience of the candidates. The UCD Veterinary Hospital has state of the art equipment including CT, MRI, ultrasound, interventional radiology, full endoscopy and arthroscopy, laser, a radioactive iodine unit and fully equipped surgical and intensive care suites. Ancillary supports include rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The Small Animal Section currently has capacity for 14 Clinical Academics/Specialist Clinicians including five surgery, six internal medicine, two emergency and critical care and one oncology specialists. These staff are supported by 10 interns (rotating and discipline specific), 9 residents and a full team of ancillary staff. The Section has collaborative ties with the Comparative Oncology Group who are active in research of animal and human cancer. Post Summary

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global challenge causing more than one million deaths annually. TB therapy is characterised by a long duration of treatment and the administration of several antibiotic drugs to overcome drug resistance. The increasing prevalence of drug-resistant TB demonstrates that current treatments are inadequate and there is an urgent need for novel therapies. Research is now focused on the development of host-directed therapies which can be used in combination with existing antimicrobials, with a special focus on promoting host defense, particularly cellular metabolism. The current post focuses on the use of new and innovative strategies, aimed at boosting the host response, increasing antibiotic efficacy and decreasing our reliance on antibiotics in the clinic. The appointee will work as part of a team of post-doctoral scientists and graduate students led by Professor Keane. The tuberculosis immunology research group uses primary human cells and molecular biology techniques to study macrophage responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, and macrophage interactions with other immune cells after infection. Techniques that will be employed by the successful candidate will include cell culture, ELISA, RT-qPCR, cell migration assays, flow cytometry and Seahorse metabolic flux assays.

 

Standard Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

The appointee will process blood and bronchial lavage samples and will undertake laboratory experiments to support the research activities of the supervisor or project to which the research assistant is assigned. In addition, the appointee will pro-actively support the day-to-day running of the lab by doing general lab and administrative duties and will aid in the supervision of students working on research projects related to the supervisor. Moreover, the candidate will help perform experiments for the acquisition of preliminary data for prospective research grant proposals.

PhD Studentship in materials and surface chemistry

Background

A four-year full-time PhD research position is available to work on a new project called SUREDETECT, which is an innovative project focused on developing a novel, silicon-based sensor for electrical detection of atmospheric ammonia (NH3).

The researcher will be based jointly in the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC), and the Materials Chemistry Research Group (MCR), which are key research centres within the School of Chemistry and the Environmental Research Institute at University College Cork. 

The project involves design, fabrication and surface-functionalisation of silicon-based platforms for electrical detection of ammonia. The project is laboratory-based and involves multi-disciplinary research drawing on surface science, materials chemistry, organic surface functionalisation and atmospheric chemistry. 

Expected Skill Set

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated person with a high level of initiative, capable of working independently and within a team. The candidate should have fluent English and excellent communication, organization, planning and interpersonal skills.

Ideally, the candidate will have a background and/or an interest in one or more of the following areas:

-           air quality monitoring

-           multivariate data analysis

-           silicon device fabrication and testing

-           electrical characterisation of materials

-           statistical and machine learning techniques 

-           scientific computing software, e.g. Matlab, R, Python or Julia

-           Surface and materials chemistry

-           designing and/or conducting experimental research.

This work will require the researcher to undertake some occasional travel to conduct experiments in partner organisations. Regular communication and co-operation with stakeholders (project partners, Research Ireland) will also be required. 

Qualifications

Minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a similar discipline with a strong component of physical sciences.

Funding Details

Research Ireland funds this research project, which is coordinated by researchers in CRAC (Dr Stig Hellebust, Prof. John Wenger) and the MCR group (Prof. Justin Holmes, Dr Subhajit Biswas).

This full-time PhD position is funded for 4 years months including a stipend of €25,000 per annum.  The studentship will also cover fees at the rate for EU students.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval.

The PhD candidate will work with a team of scientists in the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC) and the Materials Chemistry Research (MCR) group. 

The Materials Chemistry Research (MCR) group, led by Prof. Justin Holmes, is a large interdisciplinary team that includes researchers from various fields such as synthetic chemistry, surface chemistry, materials chemistry, physics, and nanoelectronics. Its primary focus is on developing functional and sustainable nanomaterials and devices for applications in electronics, optoelectronics, energy harvesting, energy storage, catalysis, and plastic recycling. The CRAC conducts research on atmospheric composition and its influence on climate, air quality, health and the environment. The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for: (i) Laboratory simulations of atmospheric processes, (ii) Development of new atmospheric measurement techniques, (iii) Field measurements and modelling to determine sources and impacts of pollution. More information on the CRAC can be found at the following link: https://www.ucc.ie/en/crac/

The CRAC has been a European leader in atmospheric chemistry research for over two decades and performs a wide range of research activities, including laboratory, field and modelling studies related to atmospheric chemistry, air quality and climate.
