The Purpose of the Role 

The AIB Trinity Climate Hub, hosted by the School of Natural Sciences, is seeking to appoint a Research Programme Officer. This post will cover the research programme of the Buckley Lab which will include researchers in the AIB Trinity Climate Hub, as well as Trinity-based researchers in the Co-Centre for Climate, Biodiversity and Water and the All-Island Climate and Biodiversity Research Network. The postholder will work closely with Professor Yvonne Buckley, who directs all three of these initiatives. 

Additionally, they will work with researchers, partners, and funders, providing logistical support to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and in compliance with institutional and funding requirements. They will arrange researcher development and training activities, manage administrative processes such as procurement and internal communications, and will act as liaison between the researchers and other operational staff. 

The Research Programme Officer will be employed by Trinity under the AIB Trinity Climate Hub and will be co-located together with the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water and the All-Island Climate and Biodiversity Research Network offices within Trinity. They will report to the AIB Trinity Climate Hub Manager, Amanda Mathieson.

 

Context 

The AIB Trinity Climate Hub is an AIB-sponsored initiative which commenced on 1st December 2024 and will run to December 2029 (5 years). 

Under the direction of Professor Yvonne Buckley and management of Amanda Mathieson, the AIB Trinity Climate Hub will strengthen and expand this world class research environment for the benefit of society and the planet. The AIB Trinity Climate Hub will focus on academic research, public engagement and education. 

Increased capacity for excellent research on climate, biodiversity and water is urgently needed to keep up with societal, economic and government demands for new technologies and expert advice on interventions for sustainability and just societal transition. This will be supported by the Research Programme Officer’s role. 

This is a specific purpose contract. The specific purpose of this employment is to bring together and support the smooth operation of research within the hub and its adjacent initiatives. Employment is not offered on an indefinite basis, as the role is tied to specific strategic activities expected to be completed within a defined period. The contract will terminate upon completion of the work or if the funding stream is withdrawn or terminated by the funder.

Post-Doctoral Researcher - APC Microbiome Ireland/ School of Microbiology

24 Months, Fixed Term, whole-time Post 

 

We seek an enthusiastic Post-Doctoral Researcher to join our ERC-funded lab. Our research combines anaerobic microbiology and bioinformatic techniques and is primarily focussed on characterising commensal spore-forming gut bacteria and the role of spores in microbiome transmission. 

The successful candidate will be based within the Browne Lab in the School of Microbiology and APC Microbiome Ireland in University College Cork. The primary role is to develop and implement high-throughput in vitro phenotypic screening assays to identify nutritional interactions between commensal gut bacteria and enteric bacterial pathogens with the aim of inhibiting pathogens. Given the expertise of the lab, the focus will be on screening commensal spore-forming gut bacteria. We have established a large in house culture collection of whole-genome sequenced gut bacteria for screening experiments. The successful candidate will have a PhD in gut microbiome research and/or anaerobic microbiology and ideally have experience of combining these techniques with bioinformatic approaches to understand gut microbiome functions. Experience in anaerobic microbiology and bioinformatics such as bacterial genomics, comparative genomics and/or functional genomics techniques is desirable.

 

UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.

Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s.  This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher.  Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association

This is an important operational role within a major strategic research programme focused on prevention, early detection and intervention for early brain injury and cerebral palsy.

The Programme Manager will co-ordinate the smooth and efficient day-to-day operations of ELEVATE, support the implementation of programme policies and procedures, and engage effectively with key stakeholders, participating sites and funders. Working closely with the ELEVATE Executive Committee, Programme Management Team, Principal Investigators and professional services colleagues, the postholder will provide operational, governance and reporting support across planning, delivery, compliance and programme oversight.

MSc Studentship: Project: PiTCROP – Pasture Irrigation with Treated Wastewater: Challenges, Risks and Opportunities

Vacancy Description

Summary: The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) University College Cork, Ireland is currently recruiting a MSC researcher for 2 years to carry out research on how wastewater might be safely reused under different climate change scenarios in Ireland. The research is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency Ireland.

 

Project: PiTCROP – Pasture Irrigation with Treated Wastewater: Challenges, Risks and Opportunities

 

Background and objectives: The PiTCROP project is exploring how treated municipal wastewater could be safely reused to irrigate pasture, grassland, and other non-food crops in Ireland, helping to inform future water and agricultural policy. The project brings together stakeholder insights from Ireland and internationally to understand attitudes, opportunities, and best practice around wastewater reuse. It also includes laboratory and glasshouse trials assessing the effects of treated wastewater on grass species such as ryegrass and white clover under different climate stress conditions.

Ultimately, PiTCROP aims to develop a practical, risk-based framework to support evidence-led decision-making on wastewater reuse in Irish agriculture, particularly in the context of increasing water scarcity and climate extremes.

 

Funding Two years stipend and EU Fees

Key duties and responsibilities: 

 

The primary focus of this 2-year MSc studentship will be research, however a particular emphasis during this stage should include;

 

  • To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of Dr Timothy Sullivan (BEES).
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • To develop a focussed research query for treated urban wastewater for irrigation in Ireland.
  • To critically appraise the identified literature and provide a systematic review.

 

  • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research with the support of and under the supervision of Dr Sullivan.
  • To become familiar with the publication process.
  • To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills.
  • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the School of BEES and the Sustainability Institute at UCC.
  • To interact closely with other postgraduate research students and postdoctoral fellows who are studying for a Masters or a PhD on the project or associated projects.
  • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Furthermore, the MSc. student will be encouraged to get a broad education. To that end he/she will be encouraged to be trained in a multitude of hands-on analysis techniques, where there will be an emphasis pollutant analysis, antimicrobial resistance and metals in wastewater, and irrigation trials. The M.Sc. student will be trained in the multi-facetted art of research, and will be mentored through scientific writing, presenting to peers at technical conferences, and interacting with collaborators from other disciplines.

 

Essential Criteria:

 

  • An environmental sciences, agricultural or plant sciences, analytical chemistry or wastewater engineering qualification to degree level.
  • Previous research experience desirable.
  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment desirable.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
