JOB SYNOPSIS

REPPP is a research collaboration between the School of Law in the University of Limerick and the Department of Justice. REPPP’s aim is to improve the evidence base in relation to youth crime and youth justice in Ireland supporting evidence informed reform in policy, programmes and practice. The REPPP team is responsible for implementing a research work programme on behalf of the Department of Justice. UCD School of Earth Sciences seeks to appoint a Lecturer / Assistant Professor (below the bar) in Palaeontology for a specified purpose, with an estimated duration of two years. The selected candidate will be an enthusiastic and engaging university teacher who will contribute to both undergraduate (Earth Sciences BSc (Hons)) and Masters Programmes.Candidates must possess a PhD and strong track record in one or more of the following areas: invertebrate palaeontology, ichnology, conservation palaeobiology, micropaleontology, stratigraphy, and Quaternary palaeoenvironments. In addition, expertise in carbonate sedimentology, and/or the stratigraphic record of Earth system change would be an advantage. The individual will be responsible for developing and teaching a new Earth Sciences module on palaeobiology and stratigraphy, as well as contributing to existing core and elective undergraduate and postgraduate Earth Science modules. This position is available from 1 September 2025 to contract end date of 31 August 2026.  

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join the Global Health team within the School of Health Sciences, University of Galway. The team is led by Professor Máire Connolly, Professor of Global and Environmental Public Health at University of Galway. Prior to joining University of Galway, Prof Connolly worked at WHO/HQ in Geneva for 15 years as Coordinator of WHO’s Disease Control in Emergencies Programme and Advisor to WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Health Security.   

Prof Connolly is currently PI of the Horizon Europe RAPIDE project, the EU4HEALTH One Health ALLIES project, the Research Ireland Insight Platform II Health Co-benefits Climate Action project and the Research Ireland Industry VENPREP project. Prof Connolly is also academic representative on the One Health Oversight Committee chaired by the Chief Medical Officer in Department of Health and Chief Veterinary Officer in Dept of Agriculture, Food & Marine with ASG in the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.  

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers working in three broad thematic areas of Global Health: Global Health Security and Pandemic Preparedness, One Health, Climate Change and Health (co)Benefits conducting research in the areas of the application of informatics, modelling and simulation for public health, participatory surveillance and use of big data for disease surveillance, use of visual analytics to support decision making in outbreak response and game-based learning for pandemic management. 

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher / Research Associate salary scale € €45,846 – €58,481 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.  

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the pay scale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.

Overview of the Department 

The School of Biotechnology (www.dcu.ie/biotechnology) is the academic unit that leads Biological Sciences, Life Sciences, Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering education and research within the Faculty of Science & Health at DCU. The School delivers both undergraduate B.Sc [Genetics and Cell Biology (GCB), Biotechnology (BT), Bioprocessing (BP), Environmental Science & Technology (EST) and Analytical Science (AS)] and taught M.Sc postgraduate degree programmes [Biotherapeutics (MBPT), Bioprocessing Engineering (MSBE), Diagnostics and Precision Medicine (MDPM)] in addition to the education and training of research MSc and PhD students under its structured PhD programme, BioTranslate. The School is also an active centre of basic, applied and multi-disciplinary research, supporting clusters of intersecting research themes which link closely with the School’s teaching programs. 

 

Role Profile

The School of Biotechnology is seeking to recruit 3 Teaching Assistants for one year. The posts can be taken up either on a part-time or full-time basis. 

Reporting to the Head of School and working under the direction of the lecturing staff in the School, the appointees will assist with the delivery of the School’s undergraduate (BT, GCB, BP, EST and AS) and taught MSc postgraduate programmes (MSBE, MDPM and MBPT).      

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Contributing to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels under the supervision of a faculty member
  • Preparing materials and equipment for the delivery of lectures, tutorials, seminars etc.
  • Assisting with the monitoring and implementation of safety protocols, under the supervision of a faculty member, as necessary
  • Assisting in the organisation and marking of assessments (assignments / presentations etc.) under the supervision of a faculty member who has first and final remit for marking
  • Assisting module coordinators with the provision of feedback on assignments to students
  • Dealing with student queries concerning module material – via appropriate communication channels under the supervision of a faculty member
  • Assisting with student recruitment and School promotional activities, such as Open Day and other similar events
  • Any additional administrative activities associated with teaching and supervision, as required by the School/Programme
  • Carrying out administrative and assessment duties linked with the post and other such duties as assigned from time to time by the Head of School/nominee

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • It is essential that applicants have a Primary degree (NFQ Level 8) in a relevant area and in
  • addition to this, it is desirable to have a postgraduate qualification in areas related to the subject areas taught in the School.
  • Previous experience of tutoring, demonstrating or teaching in relevant subject areas.
  • Strong social, team-work skills and organisational skills.
  • Dedicated to student learning.

 

Essential Training 

The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training.  Other training may need to be undertaken when required.

Role Profile

Reporting to the EDI Manager, the EDI Engagement Coordinator will work closely with relevant members of the Learning and Organisational Development team to support the coordination and administration of key equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives within DCU. These include providing governance support; leading EDI learning and development opportunities, and events; overseeing communications and campaigns; and supporting staff networks.

The role will ensure a cohesive and structured approach to EDI engagement, awareness, and training across the University, focused on creating an inclusive, safe, and respectful working environment and enhancing the overall employee experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

EDI Governance Coordination & Administration

  • Provide coordination and administrative support to the EDI Governing Authority Subcommittee, EDI Steering Committee, and EDI Working Groups.
  • Track and report on progress against DCU’s EDI strategy and action plans.
  • Manage documentation, meeting schedules, and communications for EDI governance structures.

EDI Learning & Development

  • Coordinate the scheduling and administration of EDI training for staff, in collaboration with training providers, ensuring alignment with DCU People priorities and EDI strategy.

Remote Working Policy

From the 1st of November 2024, DCU will operate its newly agreed Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'. Role Profile

Reporting to the EDI Manager, the EDI Projects Coordinator will work closely with relevant members of the Learning and Organisational Development team to support the planning and delivery of key projects related to equality, diversity and inclusion within DCU. These include gender equality, race equality, and dignity and respect initiatives and activities focused on creating an inclusive, safe and respectful working environment and enhancing our overall employee experience.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following: 

Athena Swan Project 

  • Support with the coordination of the University’s departmental Athena Swan submissions, offering guidance on best practices and requirements.
  • Support the capturing of data required for departmental applications. 
  • Coordinate the DCU Athena Swan Peer Support Network, including through facilitation of meetings, sharing resources, and coordinating communications amongst network members.
  • Support with the ongoing delivery and monitoring and evaluation of the University’s Athena Swan Action Plan 2024 – 2029.
  • Stay updated on Advance HE guidelines and sector-wide gender equality initiatives, advising on necessary adjustments to policies or practices.

 

Race Equality Project 

  • Support with the development and implementation of a Race Equality Action Plan, in line with the University’s commitment to the HEA Anti Racism Principles.
  • Collect and analyse race and ethnicity-related data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Support with awareness-raising of our race equality work, including through the development of communications strategies and campaigns.
  • Support with the planning and delivery of race equality initiatives and events for staff. 
  • Carry out administrative duties necessary to support the project.

 

Dignity, Respect and Ending Sexual Violence Project 

  • Support with the implementation of our Dignity and Respect at Work and Study Policy and our Sexual Misconduct Policy to foster an inclusive campus culture.
  • Assist in coordinating training and awareness campaigns on bullying, harassment, discrimination and sexual violence prevention.
  • Contribute to policy reviews and updates to ensure alignment with best practices in fostering a respectful work and study environment.

 

EDI Policy Development 

  • Assist in the development, review, and implementation of EDI policies, ensuring alignment with national frameworks and university strategies.
  • Support policy consultations with key stakeholders, ensuring inclusive and representative feedback.
  • Coordinate the development of guidance documents and toolkits to support policy implementation across departments.
  • Ensure EDI policies are effectively communicated to staff and students through training sessions, workshops, and written materials.

 

EDI Data and Reporting

  • Support with the collection of EDI-related data to allow us to understand our staff community in more detail.
  • Support in the preparation of internal EDI reports, dashboards, and presentations for university leadership, committees and our staff population.
  • Monitor progress against key performance indicators (KPIs) for Athena Swan, Race Equality, and other EDI initiatives.
  • Support the university’s external EDI report submissions, including gender pay gap reports and EDI Progress Reports to the HEA.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A degree (NFQ Level 7 or higher) or equivalent in a relevant field such as Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, Human Resources, Social Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in project coordination, administration, or a similar role, preferably within an EDI, HR, or higher education environment.
  • Demonstrable understanding of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles and their application in workplace policies and initiatives.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and collaborating across diverse teams.

 

Desirable

  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, with the ability to use relevant tools such as Excel, Power BI, or equivalent.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring active engagement and meaningful participation in EDI initiatives.
  • Experience working in a higher education institution or a large, complex organisation.
  • Familiarity with EDI accreditations and frameworks, such as Athena Swan, the Consent Framework or the Anti-Racism Principles.

Essential Training 

The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR), Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education, and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.

 

Salary Scale: Professional 4 - €43,732 - €64,044.

 

Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.
