This post is part of an Enterprise Ireland-funded project to support proposal development for a European Research Council Starting Grant. The proposal is for a digital and urban geographies project focused on property, platforms, and urban space. Working on a part-time and temporary basis, the RA will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) to review literature and actively assist with proposal development. In particular the RA will be reviewing interdisciplinary literature (e.g. Geography, History, Planning, Sociology, Law) on the histories of property in Ireland from a spatial justice perspective.

The Purpose of the Role: 

The School of Medicine wishes to make a cross disciplinary clinical/ academic appointment at Senior Lecturer/ Consultant level to the disciplines of Medical Education and Pharmacology & Therapeutics. 

The specific purpose of this post is to fill a Senior Lecturer / Consultant vacancy on a temporary basis pending the return of the postholder from a period of secondment. 

The postholder will ensure high-quality coherent delivery of existing activities across teaching, research, and clinical practice. As well as developing their own research interests they will play a critical role in strengthening the relationship between the School of Medicine, clinical faculty, and corporate leadership at St James’s Hospital.

 

Context: 

The school requires an adaptable and highly motivated candidate to support and lead cutting edge clinical research and education, to aid the development of curricula, the transition to internship, the strengthening of advanced therapeutic practice and to support relationships with new and existing partners. 

The role will be based between Trinity College School of Medicine and St James’s Hospital with an 0.5/0.5 Clinical/Academic FTE allocation. Within the school of Medicine, the role is cross disciplinary between the discipline of Medical Education and the discipline of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. At the Clinical site, the postholder will work closely with a multidisciplinary CPT clinical services team including consultants and non-consultant hospital doctors’ administrative staff and clinical nurse specialists. Within the Wellcome-HRB Clinical Research Facility (CRF) the postholder will work closely with the senior management team to improve access to novel high quality experimental medicines research. 

Clinical Practice elements include specialist hypertension and clinical pharmacology services including a contribution to General Internal Medicine. Educational activities include delivery of undergraduate didactic and clinical teaching, therapeutics, practical prescribing, preparation of students for the prescribing safety exam, preparation for internship (sub-internship), the transition into practice, internship, and curricular reform programmes. 

The post holder will join a highly successful research team at the Wellcome-HRB clinical Research Facility which prioritises research collaborations that enable access to complex and early phase clinical trials and advanced therapies. They will work closely with clinical partners, national and international colleagues, and industry to identify and address clinical and educational research questions of national and global significance.

Post Summary 

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship to work on a BIOFABRICATE project, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and supervised by Prof. Anne Marie Healy in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Co-supervision will be provided by Dr. Ramesh Babu in the School of Chemistry, Trinity College Dublin.

BIOFABRICATE: Integrated Bio-based Innovations for Sustainable Manufacturing, Construction, and Pharmaceutical Applications from Irish Forest Biomass is a multi-institutional programme of research led by the University of Galway, involving TCD, Technological University Dublin (TUD), Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Dublin City University (DCU), Teagasc and a number of industry partners.

BIOFABRICATE aims to develop and validate advanced bio-based materials and technologies from the growing supply of Irish forest biomass, for applications in engineered timber construction, manufacturing, food packaging and pharmaceuticals. 

The PhD student in Prof. Healy’s group will be working on a project titled: “Evaluation of the use of Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) generated from Irish forestry biomass in pharmaceutical solid dosage forms”. They will work closely with researchers in Dr. Babu’s lab in the School of Chemistry, TCD. This project aims to evaluate the properties of microcrystalline cellulose derived from Irish forest biomass (IFB-MCC) and to assess its suitability as a tablet excipient for direct compression. Studies will be undertaken to compare IFB-MCC to MCC from commercial excipient suppliers with a view to identifying if IFB-MCC can be used as a viable alternative, enabling tablet manufacture of desired quality and performance characteristics.

 

Qualifications 

• A first-class or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) primary degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, or a closely related discipline.

Role Profile

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher as part of a new collaborative project between DCU, HT Materials Science Ltd (HTMS) and Exergyn Ltd. This project, DLCool, has been awarded under the seventh round of the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF7). The main goal of the DLCool project is to accelerate the development and deployment of next generation heat transfer fluids for use in solid-state heat pumps, direct to chip cooling and other applications, such as EVs and battery storage systems.

The successful individual will lead the design, development, commissioning, and validation of a fully instrumented and monitored Thermal Test Vehicle (TTV), which will serve as the experimental platform for evaluating next-generation heat-transfer fluids across applications such as direct-to-chip cooling, solid-state heat pump loops and EV cooling loops.

The role will involve defining the TTV architecture, designing and integrating advanced instrumentation, developing automated control and data acquisition systems, engineering a closed-loop system suitable for nanofluids, executing systematic experimental campaigns to generate validated performance datasets for candidate fluids, working collaboratively across the partnership  and producing fully documented test procedures, calibration records, uncertainty analyses, and reports required for DTIF.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following: 

  • 2BConduct and deliver a programme of research to the highest standard under the supervision and direction of the PI.
  • 3BSupport the PI and the industry partners on project planning to ensure all milestones and deliverables are met, particularly regarding the development and deployment of the TTV test system.
  • 4BCollaborate with and support the work of other project researchers within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • 5BSupervise and assist undergraduate students working in this area with their capstone projects.
  • 6BProvide weekly updates and a monthly written report on progress; produce a full report and presentation at the end of the contract.
  • 7BSupport the team’s ongoing communication and dissemination efforts including social media and project website.
  • 8BLiaise with both internal and external stakeholders including industry and academic partners/collaborators. 
  • 9BEngage in appropriate training and development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, the School or Research Centre, or the University.
  • 10BCarry out administrative work associated with the programme of research as necessary.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Applicants should have a PhD in Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineering with a specific focus on fluids system design, measurement principles, instrumentation, automation and control.
  • Proven ability to design and implement fluids-based test systems in line with relevant industry standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of measurement principles and instrumentation for fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in system control and automation for fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer systems.
  • Strong work ethic, creative thinking and dedication to problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Good organisational and time management skills with an ability to prioritise and work independently.
  • Proven ability to work in a team and innovate in a multi-stakeholder environment.

Desirable

  • Experience in thermal–fluid simulation (COMSOL, ANSYS), CAD design (SolidWorks, Creo), or prior work on high-heat-flux or electronics cooling test systems is highly advantageous.
  • Experience working as part of an industry-academic consortium.

 

Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:

Understanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications

ROLE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE 

RCSI is seeking to appoint its next innovative leader to the position of RCSI Professor and Head of Department of General Practice. 

The post is a permanent professorial appointment within RCSI’s School of Medicine, appointed as Head of Department. Head of Department appointments at RCSI are subject to agreement, satisfactory performance and in accordance with RCSI policies and practice. The appointee will report to the Head of School of Medicine while in the role of Head of Department. 

This internationally respected leader will bring extensive experience in education, research and executive management to the role. In particular, the candidate will have extensive academic experience in the field of general practice/primary care education and research.

They will build on our success to date, leading and maintaining an environment of excellence in education and research in general practice/primary care, which will enable the delivery, and continuous improvement of all of our educational and research programmes as well as looking for future growth opportunities. 

They must also be an internationally competitive leader in an area of education and research aligned to general practice/primary care, clinical care and our wider thematic research areas. The appointment will substantially increase the research presence and profile of the Department both nationally and internationally and will have the capability to thrive in this environment and grow RCSI’s reputation in the area of general practice/primary care. They will be able to demonstrate strong leadership and be capable of inspiring the Department of General Practice’s education and research efforts by enhancing its reputation for scholarly and professional excellence. 

Successful experience as a senior academic and/ or department lead role is essential. Experience working in an inter-professional or multi-cultural context would be a distinct advantage as the successful appointee will actively collaborate across Schools and other RCSI campuses. Previous examples of similar collaborations at a national and/or international level would be valuable.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Hold an appropriate higher-level degree such as PhD, MD relevant to this post. 
  • Be registered, or eligible for registration on the Specialist Division for General Practice with the Irish Medical Council. 
  • Significant experience in General Practice education, including leading and innovating on undergraduate education with a sound knowledge and experience in delivering General Practice modules to undergraduate medical students. 
  • Have sound knowledge and experience of assessment in undergraduate education, including OSCEs; longcase assessment, knowledge-based assessment and professional practice. 
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of current issues and opportunities in the field General Practice/Primary Care. 
  • Have a strong track record of senior authorship in high impact peer-reviewed publications in research, clinical practice and education in the field of General Practice/ Primary Care. 
  • Have a strong track record of writing and obtaining external peer-reviewed competitive funding in the field of General Practice/Primary Care research. 
  • Have a strong track record of conducting research including: systematic literature reviews and quantitative or qualitative research. 
  • Have a strong track record of supervision at masters and doctoral level. 
  • Be a recognised international expert in General Practice/Primary Care as evidenced by a track record of regular invited talks at international conferences/ events, invitations to peer-review journals and invitations to sit on national and international grant awarding bodies.
