UCD Post-Doc Lvl 1, UCD School of Psychology, Temporary

Vacancy Description

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Psychology.

GENERATION PEACE does not ask how to protect 1.8 billion children in conflict-affected countries. Instead, it shows how youth - one-third of the world's population - can build peace. This approach challenges the portrayal of youth as perpetrators (i.e. number of child soldiers) and positions youth as a driver of quality peace, rather than an outcome (e.g. primary school enrolment). Addressing the gaps in the existing research necessitates a holistic, multilevel model tested with diverse methods across contexts and time.

More specifically, this role will advance Work Package 2 (WP2) of GENERATION PEACE, quantitatively examining the cross-national impact of youth peacebuilding on quality peace. WP2 will produce a Youth Peacebuilding Indicator (YPI), compatible with cross-national databases from 1946-2020 for 193 UN member states, operationalised across two domains: (1) capacities for nonviolent conflict transformation and (2) foundations for sustainable peace and development. The YPI will integrate (a) existing data on youth; (b) recode or `slice' existing data to focus on youth; and (c) create additional variables within each domain. Supervised coding and Expert Review will ensure data compatibility and quality. Critical to identifying potential threats to endogeneity, multilevel analyses will be complemented by an instrumental variable test and sensitivity analyses to selection and bias. The relative degree of confidence in the YPI codes will also be modelled.

Salary Range: €45,847 - €52,339 Per Annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 11th of July 2025.

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CVs submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.

The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.

Prior to application, further information (including the application procedure) should be obtained from the Work at UCD website: https://www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs/

Location: Lloyd Institute, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, College Green, Dublin 2, Ireland

Reports to: Professor Lorina Naci, Associate Professor of Psychology

Terms & Conditions: Fully funded. Annual stipend of €25,000.

Hours of Work: Full-time for 4 years. Start in 09/2025

Post Summary

Project Description

PhD applications are invited to develop advanced neuroimaging biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in mid-life, asymptomatic individuals. The Problem Dementia is a growing pandemic that presents profound challenges to health care systems, families and societies throughout the world. By 2050, the number of people living with 2 dementia worldwide could triple from 47 to 132 million, and the associated costs triple to $3 trillion. To reduce the future incidence of dementia, there is an immediate need for public health interventions that target modifiable risk factors. As exposure to these risk factors begins 20-40 years before dementia onset, interventions must be implemented in mid-life. However, the indicators of the disease process in mid-life are poorly understood, and the identification of targets of early intervention presents a great challenge. To address this critical knowledge gap, PREVENT, a large-scale population study carried out by Trinity College Dublin, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford universities, and Imperial College London, aims to establish sensitive biomarkers of very early Alzheimer’s disease (AD) process.

Professors Lorina Naci co-leads the PREVENT study at the Global Brain Health Institute, at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). At TCD, we will conduct the 3rd wave of longitudinal testing (year 8), in a cohort of mid-life individuals at high- and low-risk for late-life Alzheimer’s disease with an extensive array of assessments, previously taken at baseline and year 2 follow-up. The medical tests, including neuropsychological, neurological, lifestyle questionnaires, and bio sample analyses (e.g., plasma, saliva, CSF), will be performed by a clinical team at the Memory Clinic, St James’s Hospital, and the neuroimaging tests will be performed at the Siemens 3T scanner at Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, in Dublin, Ireland.

The PhD Project

The PhD student’s first objective will be to help conduct the 3rd testing wave of the PREVENT Dublin cohort. The second objective will be to help design and perform all relevant analyses to assess (a) the performance of established and novel pre-clinical neuroimaging markers of AD in mid-life in persons at high- relative to low-risk, and (b) the interaction between changes in neuroimaging biomarkers with clinical features, as well as the prediction of clinical decline from the baseline measures.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Applicants will hold a BA/BSc degree (or equivalent) in Psychology, Computer science, Neuroscience, or a related field
