Candidate Brief Post Doctoral Researcher_19.pdf3.88 MB
Vacancy Description

Applications are invited for the role of Post-Doctoral Researcher within the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences.

The Sustainable Food System Research Group (SFSRG) led by Dr Aylin Sahin is a team of enthusiastic and ambitious researchers working on solutions to produce healthy food products without harming the environment. The successful candidate will work on an EU-funded project (Sustain-a-Bite) which investigates the potential of fermentation technology for upcycling fruit and vegetable side streams. The project focuses on minimal processing techniques to produce plant-based foods with improved physicochemical and nutritional properties which are highly consumer accepted.

Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s.  This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher.  Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEIResearcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association

Project Title: Propelling health and sustainability through innovative food products and processes.

037683 Job Description.pdf236.93 KB
Vacancy Description

We are seeking to recruit a Post-doctoral researcher to research and develop a data collection and data analytics approach on a regional and cross county basis to enhance the shared service approach offered by Age Friendly Ireland (AFI). The Age Friendly Ireland Shared Service program within Meath County Council, supports communities in villages, towns and cities across Ireland to prepare for the rapid ageing of our population by paying increased attention to the environmental, economic and social factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults. Local Age-friendly programmes work to provide walkable streets, housing and transportation options, access to key services and opportunities for older people to participate in community activities.

The project relates to Age Friendly Ireland’s research as part of a strategic partnership for the purposes of advancing research on ageing, data and policy making supporting Age friendly Ireland’s Strategic Objectives on driving a data-driven approach by Measuring, Monitoring and Sharing the Learning and informing national policy related to aging well. By working with communities and stakeholders, AFI gathers a large amount of data related to many aspects of ageing and living.

Aim of this project, where the recruited Post-doctoral researcher is expected to drive the research, support AFI and manage the programme, is to examine existing and develop future data management / governance approaches. Aim is to optimize the shared service model enabled by improved data sharing, deployment of digital technologies and redesigned workflows. With this project we aim to design, research and implement a service model that aligns with the eight thematic areas of ageing outlined by the World Health Organisation. The range of advanced digital technologies and available data demands requires to reassess the service provision mechanism and value propositions. Understanding current and future service provisioning together with the value creation and data sharing/governance mechanism is essential, and it is expected that the recruited researcher contributes with key publications to advance the state of the art of service science.

UCD Post-Doc Lvl 1 or 2, UCD Chem & Bioprocess Eng, 20 months

Vacancy Description

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering.

Green hydrogen and biomethane are expected to play key roles in achieving Ireland's net-zero carbon target by 2050. According to the Climate Action Plan 2023, Ireland is determined to establish 2 GW green hydrogen and 5.7 TWh biomethane capacity by 2030. Green hydrogen can be produced by using excess renewable energy from wind and solar power generators (9 GW onshore wind, 8 GW solar, and 7 GW offshore wind by 2030). However, several barriers need to be overcome for hydrogen to fully utilize its benefits as it is difficult to store, transport and use. To address these, it can be converted to methane, a gas which is fully compatible with the existing infrastructure, e.g. natural gas grid. Hydrogen-to-biomethane processes employ microorganisms (hydrogenotrophic archaea) to convert H2 and CO2 to CH4. The proposed project seeks novel methods to overcome the bottlenecks of hydrogen-to-biomethane process such as poor gas-liquid mass transfer and low hydrogen bioconversion efficiency. This will be achieved by engineering cofactors to increase the rates of enzymatic biological processes and optimizing the method of gas delivery. This will eventually assist the development of an efficient and sustainable hydrogen-to-biomethane system which can play an important role as a transition technology on the road to net-zero emissions and hydrogen future.

The project aligns with Ireland's renewable energy policies and supports the integration of green hydrogen and biomethane into the energy system, contributing to Ireland's climate goals and energy security. Through innovative methods and strategic planning, we aim to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of this approach, paving the way for its broader implementation.
