Applications are invited for a temporary part-time (0.5FTE) post of a Research Statistician within the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science. 

The UCD Centre for Support and Training in Analysis and Research (UCD CSTAR) is seeking a part-time Research Statistician to join our team of statisticians and faculty. The role comprises:

  1. Engagement in research projects in a consultative role with collaborators and clients,
  2. Development of one's own research programme, Biostatistics, Medical Statistics, Epidemiology, or a related branch of Applied Statistics,
  3. Developing and delivering training courses for the Centre.

UCD CSTAR is an academic centre for research and CPD in University College Dublin, with remit to strengthen research quality by providing advice, consultancy and education in research methods to health researchers in Ireland. The Centre engages in close collaboration with clinical, laboratory and field researchers across a very wide spectrum of specialities, in order to raise the quality of study design, study protocol development, statistical analysis plans, data collection and management, statistical analysis and report writing. This is achieved through statistics helpdesks or clinics, one-on-one consultations, and short courses. 

The Centre is embedded in the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science on the Belfield campus of University College Dublin. UCD faculty members associated with the Centre are deeply involved in multiple collaborative research projects both within UCD and across the country and also deliver university accredited modules in research methods and biostatistics for undergraduate and postgraduate students. 

Salary: €42,205 - €54,625 Per Annum Pro rata @0.5FTE

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

JOB SYNOPSIS

UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1, UCD School of Ag

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science A Post Doctoral researcher is required to support research activities in the field of ruminant livestock production and enteric methane emissions. The focus of this project is to develop feed and feed additive based solutions to reduce enteric methane emissions from pasture based dairy cows with the investigation of concurrent impacts on rumen physiology, rumen fermentation and the rumen microbiome. Associated impacts on animal performance, milk yield, quality and processability will also be determined. While a range of solutions have been developed internationally to address enteric methane emissions in housed systems, Ireland's pasture based-dairy production systems necessitate bespoke solutions. Development of solutions to reduce enteric methane emissions will play a key role in Ireland meeting its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Agri sector by 25% by the year 20230.This project will quantify the potential of a range of feed ingredients and feed additives (novel and established) to reduce daily methane output from lactating dairy cows while also quantifying their effects on a range of animal physiological and production parameters. The primary responsibilities within the role will relate to animal husbandry and handling, measurement and analysis of enteric methane emissions data and measurement of rumen fermentation variables with a concurrent role in managing pasture based lactating dairy cows at UCD Lyons farm. JOB SYNOPSIS

The Research Fellow will join the Centre for Robotics & Intelligent Systems (CRIS) at the University of Limerick to contribute to the development of advanced underwater robotic technologies supporting inspection, monitoring, and maintenance activities in offshore renewable energy environments. The role will focus on AI-enabled perception, navigation, autonomy, and coordinated mission execution for underwater robotic systems, with a strong emphasis on hands-on work with real-time pose estimation of floating structures, ROV piloting and control, adaptive path planning, remote vehicle operation technologies and acoustic and/or optical imaging sensors (e.g. sonar, multibeam, laser, stereo/structured-light cameras). The successful candidate will be responsible for system integration, algorithm development, and participation in controlled testing and offshore field deployments. Overview of the department 
DCU’s current university strategy has set out ambitious goals to further develop research activity, outputs and impact, over the next five years. Over that time we expect to grow PhD numbers by 50%, published outputs by 30% and research income by over 20%. DCU’s Research Support Services are tasked with supporting our academic staff in reaching these goals – by providing high quality professional support for funding applications, by delivering a comprehensive research project administration service, and by managing and technically supporting the core technologies facilities –high-end ‘open access’ research equipment. The unit also provides DCU’s central services in areas such as research metric analysis and research ethics and integrity.

Research Support Services comprises the following three sub-teams: Research Development and Support, Research Project Administration and Research Infrastructure. The mission of the Research Development and Support team is to provide professional support for research across all fields in a proactive, researcher-centric way, in order to facilitate the development and funding of research at DCU and assist in the implementation of DCU’s Research Strategy.

Role Profile
Reporting to the Head of Research Development and Support, the Erasmus+ Development Officer will be accountable for providing a highly professional and comprehensive research assistance function for the DCU research community as part of the wider Research Development and Support team. 

Duties and Responsibilities
The Erasmus+ Development Officer will work on a range of activities that include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Assisting academic and related professional staff in the preparation and writing of Erasmus+ applications, under Key Action 2, Key Action 3, and the Jean Monnet Actions.
  • Advising on the application procedures, submission systems and terms and conditions.
  • Ensuring that applications meet eligibility and evaluation criteria and are appropriately costed to enable effective delivery.
  • Actively engaging academic staff with Erasmus+ funding opportunities appropriate to and in line with the respective Faculties’ research funding strategy.
  • Actively monitoring the Erasmus+ portfolio to ensure that opportunities to leverage further benefits (particularly research-related benefits) from activities and partnerships forged by both application and project activity are fully realised across the institution.
  • Maintaining a good comprehension of the University’s policies as they relate to:
    • Research, e.g. governance, data management, ethics and intellectual property.
    • Academic Quality Assurance, e.g., programme approval, student data management, collaborative provision protocols.
    • Partnership approval protocols.
  • Ensuring these policies are considered during the process of proposal development.
  • Working closely with colleagues across the Research Development and Support team, Research Support Services, and with other units of the University, for example (in the case of Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters applications) with the relevant staff in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registry (as required).
  • Provide all relevant assistance to allow for effective management, reporting, and operation of successful bids.
  • Where appropriate, provide assistance for funding applications to other international funding schemes outside of the Erasmus+ framework in line with the university strategy.
  • Working with the teams within Research Support Services to assist academic and research staff at all stages of the research project lifecycle.

Qualifications and Experience 
Applicants for this post must hold:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a similar or related development/application support area, with experience of supporting academics from Higher Education Institutions.
  • Knowledge and comprehension of the Erasmus+ programme, particularly the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, Key Action 2, and Jean Monnet activities.
  • Evidence of working on research funding applications and successfully securing funding.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and comprehension of the European funding landscape.
  • Customer orientated approach to problem solving and meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to give professional advice and build effective working relationships with others.

The role includes methodological development, empirical analysis using Irish and international datasets, and the production of high-quality academic and policy outputs.

 

Funding Information 

This research position is supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Programme as part of the CIRCUIT project. A salary of €46,805 per annum will be provided for two years; tenure could be extended, subject to satisfactory performance. A one-time fund for a laptop/PC for research use will be provided. They will also administer the Student Assistance Fund, which is made available to students in need of financial support at the University.

  • Marketing of the Student Assistance Fund.
  • Responsible for the assessment and processing of successful student applications for the Student Assistance Fund, including:

  • Coordinate and deliver annual reports to the HEA.

Financial Management of External Funding

  • Responsible for the administration of external funding (e.g. PATH).
  • Manage both financial records and associated administrative tasks which includes bi-monthly reconciliations with DCU Agresso system.
  • Deliver monthly and end of year reports regarding external funding to the Dean and interim reports, as required.
  • Liaise with colleagues in SS&D to ensure a balanced budget at end of year.
  • Support with funding proposals for external calls, as required.
  • Coordinate end of year and interim reports to the HEA and other funding bodies.

Financial Management of Core Budget

  • Provide financial management, analysis and reporting of the SS&D budget to the Dean of Students.
  • Management of both financial records and associated administrative tasks, which includes bi-monthly reconciliations with DCU Agresso system.
  • Deliver monthly and end of year reports to the Dean and assist with financial forecasting, highlighting potential issues (i.e. overspends) and deviations from budget, with follow up to problem resolution.
  • Liaise with Unit Heads and the Finance Office to ensure accounts are up to date and reconciled at all times.

Qualifications and Experience 

  • A primary degree or equivalent (NFQ level 7) in Accounting, Finance, Business Studies or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience in a Financial Administrator role or similar, preferably in a third level environment, with experience in:
    • account management, managing budgets and audits.
    • utilising Agresso or a similar finance system.
    • using a CRM system.
  • Proven organisational and IT Skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to deal with complexity and potentially challenging interactions on financial matters.
  • Experience working with students in a third level environment on an advisory basis, with a solid understanding of the challenges students face.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with students in a third level environment on an advisory basis, with a solid understanding of the challenges students face.
  • 3+ years’ relevant experience would be advantageous. 

 

Essential Training 

The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: 

  • Orientation
  • Health & Safety
  • Data Protection (GDPR)
  • Cyber Security Awareness 
  • AI Literacy 

Other training may need to be undertaken when required.

 

Salary Scale:

Professional 4 - €44,669 - €65,331 refer to DCU Payscales for the applicable payscale. 

Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.
