Overview of the department 

The School of English, Dublin City University, was founded in 2016, and is a research active and vibrant School with specialist knowledge in creative writing, children’s and young adult literature, poetry, Irish Studies, and studies in the long-nineteenth century.

The School of English teaches into a number of undergraduate programmes (including the Bachelor of Arts Joint Honours (BAJH), the Bachelor of Arts Media Studies, and the Bachelor of Religious Education programmes), two taught postgraduate programmes – Creative Writing (MACW), and Children’s and Young Adult Literature (MAHCL) – and a PhD programme. There are clusters of academics in the school with particular interests in Children’s Literature and Poetry Studies, and other areas of research specialization lie in Literature and the Law, Life Writing and Climate Change. Members of the School are active in university Research Centres dedicated to many of these areas. The School also has a strong commitment to Creative Writing, and a particular area of potential for the School lies in fostering Research projects through Creative Objects.

The School of English is committed to high-quality research and publications and supports its staff in such work. Its members have collaborated with colleagues across the world, and are currently involved in two major international projects, the G-Book initiative promoting Gender Awareness through Children’s Literature and the Research Ireland/Ulysses Project, “Correspondances: Poetry and Intermediality”, in which we are collaborating with colleagues from the Sorbonne and the University of Amiens. Our commitment to Research informs every level of our teaching, and proof of this lies in our production of a peer-reviewed  journal of Undergraduate research, Policeman’s Helmet Soup, which offers students an opportunity to not only publish, but demystify the process of getting published.

Role Profile

The successful candidate will be expected to play a dynamic part in the delivery of the school’s current taught programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to contribute to the identification, development and delivery of new programmes. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the collective work of the school and be alert to how it relies on collegiality and a strong sense of community.

While the successful candidate will be able to teach across the School of English's programmes, they will have a demonstrable expertise in children’s  literature. They should have lecturing experience in areas such as nineteenth-century literature, modernism and postmodernism, and have experience of conducting research seminars for undergraduates.

The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise PhD candidates, maintain a dynamic research profile, and publish regularly in leading journals. They should already have a proven research record, with at least three peer-reviewed articles or book chapters.  They will be asked to foster collaboration and co-publication both within DCU and with external partners. They should look to work with existing research networks and seek opportunities to create new ones. They should look to work with existing research networks and seek opportunities to create new ones. They should show initiative in terms of identifying possibilities for research funding that lie outside of the silo of literary studies. They should promote the idea of literary studies as a mode of social engagement, and the possibilities that exist for English studies in a cross-disciplinary context.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:

Teaching and Learning

  • Coordinate and deliver modules to the highest academic standards, using diverse methodologies to foster deep learning and equip students for lifelong learning.
  • Provide expert lecturing in Children’s Literature, while also covering core areas including 19th-Century Literature, Modernism, and Postmodernism.
  • Contribute to the design of new modules and provide research supervision for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship

  • Develop a clear research profile, publishing findings in high-impact international journals and generating research income to support initiatives.
  • Attracting and supervising postgraduate research students
  • Achieving measurable impact via citations 

Service and Contribution to the University and Society

  • Support the School’s culture of collegiality, contributing to the collective work and well-being of the academic community.
  • Participate in School and University committees and activities as required to support the School.

Qualifications and Experience 

Essential Criteria

  • Ideally, individuals will have a doctorate in English or a relevant discipline. Those with a Master's degree and substantial relevant experience may be considered, provided they are already engaging in or commit to undertaking doctoral studies.
  • Demonstrable expertise in Children’s Literature is essential.
  • Proven experience lecturing in 19th-century literature, Modernism, and Postmodernism.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with evidence of successful teamwork and a collaborative and collegial approach.
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage both academic audiences and the wider public.

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of conducting research and dissemination with a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Evidence of contributing to funded research projects and/or attracting funding from competitive research funding schemes.

Salary Scale:

Assistant Professor Salary Scale: €64,583 - €103,501

The project is called PROBONO (The Integrator-centric approach for realising innovative energy efficient buildings in connected sustainable green neighbourhoods). PROBONO is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Europe Research and Innovation Programme. Neighbourhoods are being piloted across six EU states where the PROBONO living labs are being established. We are seeking an Senior Administrative IV grade Full Time Energy & Sustainability Manager,  to work in the Estates team, with responsibility for specialising in providing energy efficiency initiatives and sustainability programmes in particular the Climate Action Roadmap which has high level targets for 2030 of improving energy efficiency by 50% from the baseline year of 2009 and to reduce the absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 51% from the 2016-18 baseline years.

As the Energy & Sustainability Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective operation and optimisation of the University’s sustainability strategy, energy strategy and operational delivery of energy efficiency initiatives.

The Energy & Sustainability Manager will lead on design and implementation of all Energy and Sustainability activities across various university properties. The Energy & Sustainability Manager will collaborate with stakeholders, including managers, engineers, and technical staff, to enhance energy and sustainability performance and overall compliance with government regulations in relation to energy and sustainability.

Reporting to the Head of Capital Development or their nominee, the successful candidate will work as part of a team in a busy, challenging, and highly automated environment.  The Estates Team provides support to both Maynooth University and our campus partners, St. Patricks College Maynooth across a variety of services including HVAC systems, mechanical and electrical, lighting and other operational systems on the estate and have overall responsibility for energy and sustainability on campus.

It is expected that the successful candidate will improve energy and sustainability performance and overall compliance with government regulations in relation to energy and sustainability. They should therefore have a working understanding of the differing challenges of each of these environments.

The Energy & Sustainability Manager will assist in leading the on-site direct labour staff and oversee contractor performance to ensure that energy and sustainability goals are achieved with a focus on continuous improvement. This includes support to On Campus accommodation (both North and South Campus).

The role will form part of the management team within the Estates Capital Development Team and the wider the Estates Office and the successful candidate will work closely with other senior managers to provide leadership and management with a focus on value for money and an integrated approach to service delivery across all Estates activities.

Salary Scale:

Post Summary

The successful candidate will join a team of 10+ researchers, including the PI, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and another research assistant. The specific post will involve the development of hearing device for improving auditory perception in noisy environments. The project will involve recruitment and data collection on neurotypical and neurodiverse volunteers, adults and children. The primary objective of that data collection is to identify the optimal configurations for the device as well as gathering qualitative insights into the experience of the participants, shaping future developments. 

 

Standard Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

The successful candidate will have a major role in recruitment, data collection, and community engagement/outreach. Depending on the future ambitions of the candidate, we will provide learning opportunities for developing, for example, skills in data analysis, writing, oral presentation. Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science. This position is part of a Research Ireland funded project "AG-MICRO: Promoting Sustainable Agriculture through Microbe-Microbe and Microbe-Plant interactions" lead by Dr Olga Lastovetsky. The aim of the project is to explore how interactions between endosymbiotic bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) affect fungal biology and the interaction between AMF and crop plants. AMF are widespread plant root symbionts that are of rising interest in sustainable agriculture as alternatives to mineral fertiliser. AMF can form intimate associations with bacteria, including "endobacteria", which live inside fungal cells, but the role of the most prevalent AMF endobacteria (Candidatus Moeniiplasma glomeromycotorum) remains unknown. The role of this postdoctoral research position is to explore the molecular bases of endobacterial-fungal and endobacterial-fungal-plant interactions using transcriptomics, metabolomics and proteomics. This will include data collection through laboratory-, greenhouse- and field-based experiments and data analysis using bioinformatics. This position is research-focused, with opportunities for professional development in areas such as communication and dissemination of results including presentations at local and international conferences, manuscript writing, and supervising students. PD1 Salary: €46,805 - €53,391 per annum; PD2 Fixed Salary: €54,850 per annumAppointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. We are currently recruiting a Post-Doctoral Scientist, with a background in biomaterial and analytical science, to join an Industry-funded multidisciplinary research project.  The Post-Doctoral Scientist will join our research team to undertake thorough experimental investigations into the process factors influencing biomaterial solution stability. The project seeks to establish analytical methodologies to determine solution stability and conduct experimental runs to investigate the solution stability under simulated production stresses such as temperature, time, forced degradation.  The successful candidate will be expected to apply their experience to conduct risk assessments and develop experimental protocols. The candidate will be expected to prepare solutions of the biomaterial of interest under a range of conditions and explore solution stability employing analytical procedures they will establish as part of the project. The candidate should have previous experience of collecting, structuring, and analysing RP-HPLC data. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with ability to conduct independent research to a high level and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The candidate will be based in the laboratory space in the School of Pharmacy, UCC, working with Prof. Abina Crean, Prof. Melissa Hanna-Brown, and Dr. Lorraine Bateman, University College Cork. The candidate will work closely with the industry partner to conduct a specified programme of research. The role will require engaging with the administrative functions in Maynooth University and Fuzhou University, the development of new administrative processes, class timetabling, managing the examinations processes, and support academic staff in Ireland and China in the delivery of their programmes. 

As a trans-national educational initiative, this role will provide the opportunity to engage with colleagues from many nationalities, and at times may require travel to China, when conditions permit.
